Genesis 5:28-32

Lesson # Genesis 5:28-32
Study Material - Genesis 5:28-32

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Gen. 5:28-32

28 And Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and became the father of a son. 29 Now he called his name Noah, saying, 'This one shall give us rest from our work and from the toil of our hands arising from the ground which the LORD has cursed.' 30 Then Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years after he became the father of Noah, and he had other sons and daughters. 31 So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years, and he died. 32 And Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Lamech was the ninth generation and here we have a departure from the usual description of his age and the birth of a child. All the other men who had sons in the earlier verses, had their sons named, but in verse 28, Lamech became the father of a 'son'. Not the father of Noah. Not the father of Seth, the father of Enosh, and so forth, but the father of a son. Noah's name is not mentioned here at first. He is named in the next verse and he is named after an accomplishment of something - 'rest'.

Note also the Lamech lived 777 years. God rested on the 7th day, so 7 refers here to the rest of God, that which we accomplish when we advance to spiritual maturity. The sevens are tripled, seven, seven, seven, because God is a trinity, Father, Son, and Spirit. Rest from the toil of our hands, is rest from the activities of this world. We work from the source of our sin nature where there is no rest. But from doctrine we receive rest, which is from God. The ultimate in our mental health for sure, but more important it is our spiritual health which is the priority.

We rose from the ground, we are from the dust, and there we will return, with no hope when we are separated from God. Only with God in our lives is there hope. The ultimate goal in the spiritual life is maturity. That is what Paul calls winning the race, attaining spiritual maturity and receiving the blessings that belong to the person with that status.

Lamech gives us a peek as to the condition of the world. Conditions were adverse, work was hard. In the next chapter we will see the conditions of violence and evil as well as the great infiltration of certain angelic creatures attempting to destroy the purity of the human race with their intermarriages and children which were half breeds to say the least, half man, half angel called Nephilim.

Lamech died just prior to the flood. He died 5 years before Methuselah, so the influence in Noah's life was his grandfather, Methuselah. Certainly Lamech was a strong believer, but under strain as he indicates. But Methuselah was the strength, the glue, that kept things together. Noah was a strong believer as well. It will take strong faith to obey God in matters that had not ever been known before. God will speak of rain and no one had ever heard of that concept. How in the world can the air hold up water? See, you pour water out of a glass and it falls straight down. Imagine their surprise when the dark clouds filled the skies and the good old Texas thunderstorm started up.

Noah had a good education, and from many of his ancestors from Enosh on. Noah did not know Adam or Seth, but he certainly knew of them. Then Lamech died and the possibility of a crutch in his dad, or granddad vanished. Noah had to depend on God.

Noah had three sons mentioned here, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Shem was a flesh colored man. Today we would call it white. Ham was a black man. And Japheth was a reddish colored man. Adam of course carried all the genes in himself for the various colors of people. This was an issue in those days just as it is in our present day. With sin running rampant there had to have been prejudice and probably on an out of control scale with respect to violence and such. The strong would control the weak. Common conclusions would be reached regarding the weak. Even though the lists of sins and the activities of slavery are not developed until other passages in the Bible, these activities existed in the days prior to the days of the flood. And they are all described with the phrase 'violence and evil'.

So all the colors are represented prior to the flood, and all the colors survived the flood. All the colors came from one source. All the colors came from the same source. So here we are reminded by God that color is not an issue. There is no superior race nor an inferior race. Color has no more value than dust from which it came. The soul is the issue in life, and the soul has no color. The content of the soul is the issue in the spiritual life, and the content comes from ones attitude toward God. Take in Bible doctrine and have a strong and powerful soul. Reject it and have a weak soul. Life is as simple as that. Making that concept real in your life seems to be the difficulty though. But consistent study of Bible doctrine will accomplish rich blessings and rest for you in your life as it did for Adam, and Methuselah, and Noah, and a long list of other mature believers in history.

Spiritual growth is not a quick lesson one can get on a weekend, but it is rather a lifetime commitment to the study of Gods Word.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
