Genesis 9:8-11

Lesson # Genesis 9:8-11
Study Material - Genesis 9:8-11

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Gen. 9:8-11

8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, 9 'Now behold, I Myself do establish My covenant with you, and with your descendants after you; 10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you; of all that comes out of the ark, even every beast of the earth. 11 And I establish My covenant with you; and all flesh shall never again be cut off by the water of the flood, neither shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth.'

God offered a covenant not just with Noah, but with Noah and his three sons, and all animal life that breaths and suffered destruction in the flood. The promise is to never again flood the earth to destroy all life, Isa. 54:9, and even more, God has promised to keep the oceans in their place, Job 38:10-11, locking them into their places within the confines of the oceans.

Even though the end times will see a burning destruction of the earth and a new earth reappear, sin was once drowned in judgment, but did not stay down, will finally be destroyed permanently in God final judgment and restructuring of the universe.

The flood demonstrates Gods execution of judgment and that nothing can hide from God or His wrath. The period following the flood demonstrates Gods endless mercy, for though sin is rampant and possibly as bad, at times and in various locations, as the period before the flood, God has not punished the entire world by total destruction. Only the isolated locations, the isolated groups of peoples, the individuals, who have rejected God either by apathy or antagonism, has God punished by various means.

God has a quiver full of arrows, and He has voluntarily broken permanently the worldwide flood arrow, never to be used again. There are many other arrows still at His disposal, however, and any one of them are equally as destructive if not more so.

God offers this agreement unilaterally. Man nor animal have anything to offer in exchange for this covenant. This is a gift from God to all living creatures despite the sinful nature of all living things, especially mankind. As goes man, so goes the environment around him. As mans fails, so does the world around him and the destruction overflows to the animal kingdom over which man has been given authority. Unfortunately man treats animals in general with contempt and is irresponsible in their management. This is why you see abuses to animals. The wiping out of animals from life on this planet. Animals are met for food certainly, but they are also companions, work sources, and a means of transportation, in addition to their roll in the balance of nature in the world around us.

This agreement given to man is part of an overall command and agreement, and warning against sin and its repercussions. We saw in the previous verses the command for control over sin and especially criminal activity, such as murder. The restraint from killing man, as well as the restraint of eating living flesh. These have important implications in that they assure some kind of legal process for the control over wrong doing, and the protection of the general population from extremely bad people as well as the maintenance of food preparation and control of disease.

In the preflood days the life spans were in the 900's of years. Immediately after the flood the life spans dropped dramatically into the 400's and then the 200's, then the 100's of years. See the Generations chart in the image section on the Index page. Today our average life span is under 100 years, and we have all the technology, and we boast of having a longer life span today than in the few centuries just prior to our own and our life span is much shorter than the post flood centuries. With shorter life spans, the hygiene, and food preparation, and general dealing with human waste and trash will be more of an issue than prior to the flood.

God sends us at various times, storms, floods, earthquakes, disease, drought, and so forth, as reminders of our weakness in this world. We certainly have more technology than at anytime in the past, more scientific knowledge, and still these reminders of our weakness should serve as incentives of humility in our attitude toward God. Nothing wrong with technology unless it becomes your god replacement, then the destiny you will face is doom and misery. Technology cannot heal the soul nor give it strength, only Bible doctrine can do that.

In the first 1600 + years, man took advantage of Gods blessing and pursued corruption. They became a testimony for judgment and the results of rejecting God. Since the flood, the next 4500 years, give or take, have seen man do the same things over and over again. Yet with constant reminders of God and His plan for our lives, man has pursued the corrupt paths in search of those things that God gives us freely when we pursue and attain spiritual maturity.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
