Genesis 13:8-13

Lesson # Genesis 13:8-13
Study Material - Genesis 13:8-13

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Gen. 13:8-13

8 Then Abram said to Lot, 'Please let there be no strife between you and me, nor between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brothers. 9 Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me: if to the left, then I will go to the right; or if to the right, then I will go to the left.' 10 And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the valley of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere-- this was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah-- like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go to Zoar. 11 So Lot chose for himself all the valley of the Jordan; and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus they separated from each other. 12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled in the cities of the valley, and moved his tents as far as Sodom. 13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked exceedingly and sinners against the LORD.

Two attitudes are now emerging. Abram, on the one hand, wishes to work something out. Lot, on the other hand, is not satisfied with what he has. Abram has some doctrine in his soul and seeks to work out a solution. Lot is ruled by his sin nature, and has a selfish attitude.

Note that the strife between them is petty. In the land, there are other peoples living, raising their flocks and families. Decades later, even centuries later, there will be even greater populations in the land. The land consists of thousands of square miles of territory. More than enough land for Abram and Lot's herds, but they are not looking at the forest here. They are concentrating on a few little trees in the forest, and squabbling over them.

Lot is aware of the lands to the east, in the Jordan river valley. This is where the dead sea is located today. At that time, the dead sea did not yet exist. This is where Sodom and Gomorrah are located, and today are currently at the bottom of the dead sea.

So Lot chose the wickedness of these cities. Cities that were on the verge of destruction, and Lot went to live there. Lot was well aware of their reputations. Just as Abram was well aware of the reputation of Pharaoh, so information and news traveled throughout the land and Abram and Lot, were aware of the peoples around them, just as peoples around them were aware of Abram and Lot. Regardless of the technology of the day, news always travels.

Both men were surrounded by unbelieving populations. One would expect strife between believers and unbelievers. But, between believers, people who are in the family of God by virtue of the fact that they have believed in the Son of God, Jesus Christ, there should be no place for strife. Especially, if they are advancing in their spiritual lives. Looking to God for provision, believers should avoid conflict between themselves. Life is short enough as it is, to waste time in quarrels and arguments, especially petty ones, and especially when a solution is readily available. But, if one person is advancing and the other is not, then strife will occur. The solution is as Abram chose. Do not add fire to the fire, but offer a solution. Either the other person will listen and agree, or they will try to cheat you, or they will try to get the better end of the deal. And in the end, you, the advancing believer will really get the best choice, and the other person, the one who lacks doctrine will lose much more than they were trying to gain.

Lot had his eyes on the prosperity of the lands to the east. Lot has been riding on the coat tails of Abram for a long time. Lot did not accumulate his wealth by his own efforts, but through the association with Abram. Note that later, as Lot separates from Abram, Lot will lose everything. Negative believers, have no resources to hold on to the things they have. Nor do they have the inner resources in their soul to handle the problems that will certainly overtake them. Lot suffered under the illusion, that he had accomplished all that he had from his own abilities. He ignored the association with Abram, and the realities that God was the true provider, not himself.

Abram, on the other hand, learned from his mistakes, and to date he has made some god ones. Abram recognized that God provided all that he had, and thus he gave Lot the choice of where he would like to live. Lot chose wickedness, the production of evil, which is the policy of the sin nature. Lot moved away from Bible doctrine, Bethel. Lot went east, to the cities that were produced by the world, the production of worldly thinking.

Abram on the other hand, went west, toward Bethel and doctrine, and remained in Canaan, in the land promised.

Now we too have our promised land, and we have our Sodom. We choose one or the other in our daily decisions, when we either decide to study our Bible or not. The daily Bible study will provide blessings. Ignoring it will provide misery in your life.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
