Genesis 14:1-2

Lesson # Genesis 14:1-2
Study Material - Genesis 14:1-2

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Gen. 14:1-2

1 And it came about in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim, 2 that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).

Chapter 14 of Genesis sets the stage for the explanation of the forces at work in this world. Here we have the first recorded war in the Bible. The four kings from the east seeking to put down the revolt of the five kings from the Jordan valley.

There are several players in this battle. Many are renowned men of history. In the first group, Amraphel or better known as Hammurabi king of Shinar (Babylonia), in alliance with Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Nations (Goiim). These are the mighty kings in the eastern alliance who controlled or ruled the west. They had such power that they collected taxes, tribute, from the kings of the Jordan valley, who will get tired of the payments required of them and revolt.

The members of the second alliance were, Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the Zoar king of Bela.

This was a two part battle, but before we get to that there are certain things we need to know about these alliances. Again there are two alliances, but they would not have much impact on our passage were it not for the involvement of Lot and Abram, who will make up our third and fourth group. Lot being the third group, and Abram making up the fourth.

Now the picture is nearly complete. The forces of the east, the first group represent an oppressive group of nations. Those nations or persons, if you will, who seek to control those around them. They wish to have others serve their needs and if a revolt occurs they put it down with force. Violence and aggression is their only tool of enforcement. That combined with intimidation and fear they lust for power, wealth, and the desires of their own selfishness. They are neither interested in the ability of their servants, or their needs. They ruled nations are there for service and nothing else. If there is no cooperation, those who do not cooperate are eliminated and replaced by anyone else who will. The strength of the ones ruling is in the weakness of those ruled.

Bera and Birsha on the other hand, were the leaders of the cities of the plains. They sought their thrills in pleasures of the body. Their lusts were more of a lascivious nature. Not seeking to rule others per se, they sought to be left alone and to have fun, but that too comes at the expense of others. All sin, takes selfishly, in some form at the expense of someone else.

On the one hand we have the wickedness of lust to rule and control others, and on the other hand we have the wickedness of lust for self indulgences in pleasure. Both serve evil, which is the policy of the sin nature. But we will see that Jesus Christ controls history, and He does it in various ways. One of those ways is to set one evil party against another for the judgment of the latter. No one gets away with anything and the former evil party will eventually get their due judgment sooner or later, but this is a common tool which God uses in the pursuit of punitive action against persons or even nations on this earth.

In our past century, Hitler is probably the most known man of evil, and when people ask why such a man could have risen to power, or why God would have allowed it, then here is the explanation. There was a lot of evil in the world. Evil which had risen to a high level and had to be placed in check. Hitler was a tool for part of that process. Hitler rose to power and many suffered as a result, but in the end, God removed Hitler for His evil. So many were saved as a result of those events in our recent history. The world was reshaped in terms of spheres of power. Many were disciplined in a variety of ways, some slightly, others to the point of death. The foundations of the world were shaken and there were repercussions that affected that generation and those to follow. So the answer as to why is not a short answer, because there were many answers. Many people moved around the world which in turn had an impact on their new homes. Most likely many people reading these study notes were affected either directly or indirectly by the events of WW II, or even by the events of wars in later years since then. Hitler is just an example of the use of one evil power in the punishment of another evil, and God controls it all. There are no innocent parties, no one was injured by accident, no mistakes were made. All of it worked out for the better, and those who stuck with doctrine would come through it with blessings in pursuit.

Abram will demonstrate this soon.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
