Genesis 17:9-14

Lesson # Genesis 17:9-14
Study Material - Genesis 17:9-14

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Gen. 17:9-14

9 God said further to Abraham, 'Now as for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. 10 This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you. 12 And every male among you who is eight days old shall be circumcised throughout your generations, a servant who is born in the house or who is bought with money from any foreigner, who is not of your descendants. 13 A servant who is born in your house or who is bought with your money shall surely be circumcised; thus shall My covenant be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 But an uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.'

It is a dangerous thing to make light of divine institution, to ignore or otherwise reject them, and to live in the neglect of them. God herein takes the private parts of the male, that is the dead and loose skin on the head of the penis, or foreskin as it is generally called, and demands that it be cut off. Thus representing the act of faith, and the throwing away of that which is dead in ones life, which is sin.

Here is the second part of the contract. In verse 4, God said, 'As for Me...', and now in this verse, God makes reference to Abraham's part in all of this, 'Now as for you...'.

God has already promised the new name, the faithfulness of God to those who belong to Him, an inheritance as well as rest in ones life. The rest, which is Gods rest, was referred to by Joshua in Heb. 4:8. It is arrived at by means of walking before God in a blameless manner. We call this spiritual maturity, or growing up in the spiritual life.

Here God commands a sign or a seal to make this contract permanent and official. Circumcision is that sign or seal, Rom. 4:11. Thought it is the cutting off of dead skin, it is not the act of circumcision that saves one from sin and death. The covenant requires this act to be done on infant sons at the age of 8 days from birth. At this point in life, infants have no mental understanding of life let alone God. Yet this is a picture of parents passing down to their offspring, to future generations, the principles of Bible doctrine. As well as a reminder to the man every time he urinates, that the principle of faith and salvation are in his very own hand, but closer to him than his most private parts. The soul is the single most private part of the human existence. It is hidden and out of sight from all but God.

The true circumcision is of the soul and is acquired by faith in Jesus Christ. All of these symbolic actions are representations of the spiritual life. The bloody act of circumcision gives way to the bloody act of the Cross. Just as one does not bleed for salvation, but receives it through faith, so too, Christ did not bleed to death on the Cross to pay for our sins. He endured punishment for three hours in total darkness and while still alive, then and only then, after all the work of the Cross was completed, did He die physically.

The covenant was not confined to just Israelites, but was open to gentiles as well, strangers or foreigners.

The covenant was for rest and a destiny in heaven for all of eternity. There is a land contract as well but that will not be until the second advent of Christ. That land contract will eventually give way to an eternal land contract in heaven as it were.

The mechanics of ratification is simple. The infant child is circumcised not by himself but by his parents or some person knowledgeable in the surgical procedure. The child has no say in the matter. He is helpless in the matter. Therefore no credit goes to the child. God does all of the work in salvation, in the advancement of the person to spiritual maturity, in the provisions off all types in the persons life and in eternity. We have no part in Gods covenant except that we are to walk before Him and walk blamelessly.

Walking is the application of doctrine in ones life. Walking is ones life. You cannot apply what you do not know, therefore you must learn and comprehend and understand, in order for you to be able to walk. That requires a daily study of Bible doctrine, which teaches so that you will learn, etc.

All the while that you are doing this walk, then you must be blameless, which is the fellowship concept, which we have studied in many lessons. There is also a specific study on 'Fellowship' on the Index Page.

To disregard Gods command, is a dangerous affair. Circumcision is representative of salvation by faith. To reject Gods salvation offer, that is believing in Christ, means eternal condemnation. To accept it means an eternal life in heaven after we leave this world. To reject the walk of the Christian life, means no spiritual growth, no advanced blessings. To adhere to Gods call to advance in ones spiritual life, means to advance to spiritual maturity and receive those advanced blessings and to be a winner as described by Paul.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
