Habakkuk 2:15-17

Lesson # Habakkuk 2:15-17
Study Material - Habakkuk 2:15-17

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Habakkuk 2:15-17

15 Woe [howy] unto him that giveth his neighbour [rea] drink [shaqah] , that puttest [caphach] thy bottle [chemeth] to him, and makest him drunken [shakar] also, that thou mayest look [nabat] on their nakedness [ma`owr] !
16 Thou art filled [saba] with shame [qalown] for glory [kabowd] : drink [shathah] thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered [arel] : the cup [kowc] of the LORD'S [Yahovah] right hand [yamiyn] shall be turned [cabab] unto thee, and shameful spewing [qiyqalown] shall be on thy glory [kabowd] .
17 For the violence [chamac] of Lebanon [Labanown] shall cover [kacah] thee, and the spoil [shod] of beasts [bahemah] , which made them afraid [chathath] , because of men's [adam] blood [dam] , and for the violence [chamac] of the land [erets] , of the city [qiryah] , and of all that dwell [yashab] therein. KJV-Interlinear

15 'Woe to you who make your neighbors drink, Who mix in your venom even to make them drunk So as to look on their nakedness! 16 'You will be filled with disgrace rather than honor. Now you yourself drink and expose your own nakedness. The cup in the LORD'S right hand will come around to you, And utter disgrace will come upon your glory. 17 'For the violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you, And the devastation of its beasts by which you terrified them, Because of human bloodshed and violence done to the land, To the town and all its inhabitants. NASB

Deception of self leads to an insatiable desire to deceive others. This deception has its motives - advancement of self in some fashion. You will see this a lot in social interactions. He says to her, 'I love you.' Which really has a different objective. The politician will say anything in order to get elected, knowing full well that once elected he can ignore his promises, or turn to convenient excuses for not keeping them. The salesman says whatever in order to get the sale. Cruel governments try to deceive the citizens with many forms of lies, in order to keep them under their control. And so forth.

To deceive, to lead astray, to gain advantage, that is the objective of using the concept of strong drink. The mixing in of venom is an enhancement of the otherwise strong characteristics of the drink, as the one party tries to overwhelm their intended victim.

Their objective? To see that which they themselves are exposing in their own life - their nakedness. And that means their spiritual nakedness.

Bible doctrine is the clothing of the honorable soul. Lack of doctrine means the person is naked. Naked spiritually.

God uses the physical description in order to communicate the spiritual state. If you review the first section of this study, the KJV-Interlinear section, then the foreskin and shameful spewing are a reference to the male sex organ, and the product of the final stages of sex. Not sure how else to describe that tastefully. If there are youngsters present in your study then you can use the concept of a person getting sick and running at both ends, for this also is a part of the drunkenness picture.

Isaiah describes mans righteousness as filthy rags. Those rags refer to feminine rags being reused, never changed, after an exceptionally heavy monthly cycle. Ok, so we are beginning to draw a picture here.

The disgust of a public sexual act by a single male, combined with the disgust of reusing rags which have never been cleaned, combined with the effects of extreme illness or drunkenness, and all this literally covers the body of the person. Complete with all the odor that you can imagine and so forth. That should make a pretty good picture.

And, what's more, the individual is not concerned with their own appearance, nor do they see anything wrong with it.

The evil person is anyone who ignores God in their life. He is anyone who is indifferent toward God. It includes anyone who just uses God when it is convenient, and so forth. In so doing the evil person applies this attitude toward others, caring nothing for them, and only seeking a dishonest objective for self.

The result? Disgrace. The evil person, the negative person, sees them self as honorable, as doing the right thing in their own eyes. They see nothing wrong with it as long as they do not hurt anyone, or don't get caught. They see victims as deceivers as they themselves are, so whatever advantage they get serves the victims right, because the victims would do it to them. Or so they would rationalize.

In pride and gloating, in false poor me attitudes, the evil person celebrates their wit, and their schemes, and their insecurities even.

Look in the mirror a see if you can see this, stuff, oozing all over yourself. What? Can't see it. Well, no one can smell themselves. So God paints a picture of you, when you are not lined up in your life, with the word of God.

But in the future, after you die, then the evil person will see what they thought was their glory, the grandness of self, is really a pile of yuk. A lot of yuk. A whole lot of yuk.

Those who gloated over their shame, or used life for their own selfish intents, or took advantage of their drunken victims, will be filled with the shame. And shame here means intense contempt.

The grandness of Lebanon, which at one time in David's day, must have been one of the most beautiful places in the world, was destroyed by the Chaldeans. And it was destroyed thoroughly. They killed the wildlife. They cut down all the forests. Look at Lebanon today and you see a rocky and desolate place. Lebanon has never recovered from the devastation of the Babylonian invasion and sacking, which occurred about 2600 years ago. That is a long time for no recovery.

And that teaches us another lesson.

Ignore God in your life and you will lose in life. And, you will never recover.

History gives us many examples of disasters, from which we should learn a lesson, and learn to avoid the pitfalls that others have fallen into. We can learn from them, or we can ignore them, and pretend that it isn't relevant in our life.

Just remember to look in that mirror tonight, and imagine yourself all covered with the yuk we have described, and then ask yourself, 'Who will kiss me now?' Not even your momma would be so bold.

Certainly God will not have anything to do with you, until you clean yourself up. We call that cleaning, or washing process, fellowship. Or, the concept of confession which is the cleansing process and fellowship as the resulting clean state, following a thorough washing.

It is not enough to just be clean, however. You need to be dressed and then arrayed with beautiful accessories beyond that. And Bible doctrine in the soul, Bible doctrine applied in ones life accomplishes all of that, and more.

Ignoring all of this, will get you the violence dumped back on yourself, that was applied against others in life. And the hurt will be beyond description. Don't be fooled, because the hurt is not here today, or tomorrow, or even into next year. God has more patience than you.

Remember the person falling from the airplane? The thick fog will continue for only so long. Once you come out of the fog, and see the ground racing up toward you, then you won't have much time to change everything in your life.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
