Haggai 1:1-2

1 In the second [shanayim] year [shaneh] of Darius [Dar`yavesh] the king [melek], in the sixth [shishshiy] month [chodesh], in the first [echad] day [yowm] of the month [chodesh], came the word [dabar] of the LORD [Yahovah] by [yad] Haggai [Chaggay] the prophet [nabiy] unto Zerubbabel [Zarubbabel] the son [ben] of Shealtiel [Sha'altiy'el], governor [pechah] of Judah [Yahuwdah], and to Joshua [Yahowshuwa] the son [ben] of Josedech [Yahowtsadaq], the high [gadowl] priest [kohen], saying ['amar],
2 Thus speaketh [amar] the LORD [Yahovah] of hosts [tsaba], saying [amar], This people [am] say [amar], The time [eth] is not come [bow], the time [eth] that the LORD'S [Yahovah] house [bayith] should be built [banah]. KJV-Interlinear

1 In the second year of Darius the king, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came by the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest saying, 2 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, 'This people says,' The time has not come, even the time for the house of the LORD to be rebuilt.' NASB

Just a few quick points first.

Zarubbabel - Descended.
Shealtiel - I have asked God.
Judah - Celebrated.
Joshua - Jehovah is the Savior or the Savior is God. This Greek word counterpart is 'Jesus.'
Josedech - Jehovah is righteous.

Psa. 74:9
9 We do not see our signs; There is no longer any prophet, Nor is there any among us who knows how long. NASB

This was the common complaint of the Jews. No signs, no prophet. We don't have any means of getting into contact with God. Certainly typical of people who are really not interested in God, this excuse was without merit.

Jesus Christ controls history. Even in the names of these men, to whom Haggai addresses his initial complaint for their inaction, Gods rule is evident.

While the Jews were in captivity and especially during the 400 silent years just prior to the birth of Christ, Gods plan rolled right on despite the lack of prophets, despite the lack of interest in Him. God does not need anyone, nor anything of mankind in order to accomplish His own purpose.

All of these names of men (above) give reference to the Savior (Son of Righteousness), who is God, who descends to the earth (as man) and is celebrated, and all is in compliance with Gods plan which was determined in eternity past (divine decrees).

Many years earlier (about 16 years earlier) the rebuilding of the Temple started. An alter was built, a foundation was started but then opposition and political pressure brought everything to a stop. This might have been an excuse for a while, but after all opposition had died down, the people continued in their indifference, which was growing, and did nothing for a very long time.

Their indifference had grown up so much that days turned into months, turned into years and now nearly two decades have passed. People were simply too busy with other things in their lives and that is the common excuse. And an excuse is really all that it is. This is how people squander their entire lives. There is always something more important and no time for doctrine.

People do not need to commit whole days or weeks at a time in order to grow up spiritually. You have time to eat and go to the bathroom, and do the things necessary for maintaining your own physical body. You should be able to set aside fifteen or thirty minutes a day (even at bed time) to do that which is necessary to maintain your own soul. And, by the way, your soul is far more important than your physical body.

Actually if you take care of your soul first, then your physical needs will be taken care of as well. Surprising as that might seem.

Haggai's message did not come from him but from the Lord God almighty. He addressed the leadership first. It is their responsibility to see what needs to be done and then to make it happen. But they had been remiss in their responsibilities.

Does this let the common person off the hook? No. Each individual has their responsibility to support and to do what is necessary to promote the teaching of the Word of God. No one has to reach down out of heaven and tell us what to do from moment to moment. Only children (young ones) need to be told repeatedly. To ignore ones duties is to admit guilt to God for ones failure to fulfill ones obligations to God.

More on the excuses of the Jewish people in the next few verses.

But for now, 'the time is not right yet.'

'We have too many other things to do in our lives. Too much to catch up on. Too many goals to pursue. Too many things that we want to accomplish in our short little lives while here on this earth. To many bills to pay. To much work to catch up on. Just too much of anything that you can think of. We have no time for God. No time for doctrine. But we of course respect God and His Word and all of the nice little stories that have been made available for us to read to our children. But please wait. Three is plenty of time .....'

Once upon a time Satan was in counsel with some of his top demons. 'How can we prevent mankind from getting any blessing from God?' Satan would ask.

And they replied after some thought, 'We can convince man that he has all the time in the world. That there is no hurry.'

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
