Haggai 2:18-19

18 Consider [suwm] [lebab] now from this day [yowm] and upward [ma`al], from the four [arba] and twentieth [esriym] day [yowm] of the ninth [tashiy`iy] month, even from the day [yowm] that the foundation [yacad] of the LORD'S [Yahovah] temple [heykal] was laid, consider [suwm] [lebab] it.
19 Is the seed [zera] yet in the barn [maguwrah]? yea, as yet the vine [gephen], and the fig tree [ta'en], and the pomegranate [rimmown], and the olive [zayith] tree [ets], hath not brought forth [nasa]: from this day [yowm] will I bless [barak] you. KJV-Interlinear

18 'Do consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month; from the day when the temple of the LORD was founded, consider: 19 'Is the seed still in the barn? Even including the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree, it has not borne fruit. Yet from this day on I will bless you.'' NASB

God, through Haggai, has just finished chastising the people from Judah. They heard the messages from Haggai, and they basically ignored them. They tried to earn their way back to God through crediting themselves for their efforts in rebuilding the Temple, rather than returning to their studies of the scriptures and thus restarting their spiritual lives.

Now He turns around and gives them a promise of blessing. But, with a reminder to recall their economic situation. Ones pocket book is one of the best ways of reminding a person of their relative success or failure in life. It isn't the only way of course, but when hard times fall on a people, then their pocket book contents, or lack of contents, is a very good reminder that they are dependent on something or someone else for their livelihood. Sort of like getting shot right between the arrogant eyes.

And so Haggai reminds the people that their expected prosperity (grain in the barn, wine in the vats) is very low. 'Is the grain in the barn?' No, there are no staples of life. 'Are there wine and pomegranates?' No there are no extras or pleasures for this life.

The people expected more out of life due to their own efforts apart from God, and their expectations were unreasonable. The jungle with all of its dangling enticements, does not give you anything, but takes all sooner or later.

But regardless of your former attitude toward Christ, God in general, or Bible doctrine, God will bless you when, you return back to your Bible study and your active spiritual growth. God provides both the basics and the extra pleasures for your life.

Is this wrong of God to burden you with such a demand? No. Because God offers you only the truth of life. The jungle from which your only other alternative of a future might come, is all lies. God offers freedom. The jungle offers enticements that are deceitful traps of slavery. God offers an eternity of blessings and more. The jungle only operates within the boundaries of your life span on this earth.

There is a direct correlation between your attitude toward Bible doctrine, and your prosperity and destiny.
Trust in God and you will be prosperous. That is a certainty.

Ignore God in your life or try to appease God with your own definition of an acceptable life, and you will have a life of misery and will never attain what you want in life. That too is a certainty.

Your spiritual life is far more valuable than all of the gold, and silver, and precious stones that exist on the entire planet - discovered or undiscovered. That amount of worldly wealth amounts to a lot. Yet your spiritual life exists with you right inside your soul and will reside with you into eternity.

It is the spiritual life, or the life which you have attained by your daily study, which will qualify you for blessings from God both now and especially in eternity. Eternity is a very long time.

You can estimate your earnings or wealth potential for your life span in this life, but can you estimate your extra earnings or extra wealth for all of eternity? I'll give you a hint. Ignore God and your extra's will amount to zip. Pursue God in the proper format of the spiritual life, and your extra's will exceed your imagination by infinity. Big difference between the two.

Why would anyone want to cling to the low pay of this life (regardless of that amount), and trade away the unbelievable wealth of eternity (which infinitely exceeds it). Why would anyone want to embrace the miseries of this life, and ignore the blessings of a better life, in this life.

In life there are those who have no dreams, they are so detached from reality. There are those who have dreams, but they are merely distant wishes. And then there are those (spiritually mature believers) who not only have their dreams, they receive them and live them. Which are you?

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
