Haggai 2:23

23 In that day [yowm], saith [na'um] the LORD [Yahovah] of hosts [tsaba], will I take [laqach] thee, O Zerubbabel [Zarubbabel], my servant [ebed], the son [ben] of Shealtiel [Sha'altiy'el], saith [na'um] the LORD [Yahovah], and will make [suwm] thee as a signet [chowtham]: for I have chosen [bachar] thee, saith [na'um] the LORD [Yahovah] of hosts [tsaba]. KJV-Interlinear

23 'On that day,' declares the LORD of hosts,' I will take you, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, My servant,' declares the LORD,' and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you,' 'declares the LORD of hosts. NASB

A signet ring is a ring that bears the official seal of its owner. It can be used in signing important documents or simply bear the mark of the owner proving that the communication or whatever the mark is sealed upon, actually comes from its owner and not from some other false source.

Here God is not choosing Zerubbabel as His heir, but God is choosing the line from which the first advent of the Savior will come.

The significance of comparing Zerubbabel to a 'signet ring' (a seal of royal authority or personal ownership) is clarified by the imagery in Jere. 22:24-25

Zerubbabel is set at the head of the nation in the place of Jeconiah, whose rejection from the monarchy had been stated as follows: 'As I live, saith the Lord, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim King of Judah were the signet upon my right hand, yet would I pluck thee thence,' Jere. 22.

God said that if Jehoiachin (Zerubbabel's grandfather) were His signet ring, He would pull him off His hand and give him over to Nebuchadnezzar. Haggai is now saying that in Zerubbabel, God was reversing the curse pronounced on Jehoiachin. Jehoiachin was negative toward God and therefore rejected by God. Zerubbabel was positive toward God and therefore embraced by God.

The signet ring is also refers to the 'most precious' and valued possession, and certainly Jesus Christ is that in all respects. Therefore when a positive believer advances toward spiritual maturity, they too become the most precious of possessions to God because of the doctrine and spiritual assets within their soul. Jesus Christ in us, makes us the signet ring of God.

The true Zerubbabel is Jesus Christ, the future Son and antitype of Zerubbabel, and Christ is the signet in the hand of the Father, both passively and actively, whereby God impresses His importance and highest of values, on men, angels, and all of creation through Christ.

Zerubbabel is a descendent of David through both lines of his parents, from Nathan and Solomon just as Jesus Christ will be several centuries later. This promise of the Savior will not come directly from Zerubbabel, but will come from his spiritual descendants.

Just as Abraham was promised to have many nations and sons, which promise was fulfilled not in his own personal children, but was fulfilled in future generations.

Zerubbabel was in the process of rebuilding the Temple. A temple of stone. Jesus Christ is building a Temple of the spirit, one not of this world but one constructed from the material contained within the scriptures.

This prophecy was fulfilled at the birth of Christ through to the Cross, resurrection, ascension, and session, and will be completed at the Second Advent when Christ completes the day of judgment against all of the unbelieving and negative world, and formally takes the reigns of power.

Zerubbabel is one illustration of the rule and authority possessed by Christ as the Son of David, the royal line, and in Zech. 6, Joshua will be appointed High Priest, the other position which Christ will hold as both King and High Priest, thus completing His total power and authority over all of creation before God (the Father).

The prophecies are certain and therefore will come into reality at some point in the future. Now in this life, you have to decide if all of these stories are more than stories, and therefore worth pursuing, or if they are just stories and only worth an occasional mention or thought from time to time in your life.

Haggai is the book of procrastination. Procrastination comes from not being convinced as to the true importance of its subject. If Bible study is not important enough, then it can wait. And waiting eventually leads to being forgotten. Procrastination also is an indication of indifference and lack of belief. Not belief in Christ as savior, but lack of belief in the power and authority and eventual benefits of Bible study.

Be careful of that which you choose to ignore in life. Bible study and the spiritual life is the most ignored thing in human history, and yet Bible study and the spiritual life is the most valued thing which leads to even greater value in Gods eyes.

Haggai said it best, 'Consider your ways.' For your own decisions now will either make or break your entire present life and your entire future.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
