Job 20:16-17

16 He shall suck [yanaq] the poison [ro'sh] of asps [pethen]: the viper's ['eph`eh] tongue [lashown] shall slay [harag] him.

17 He shall not see [ra'ah] the rivers [palaggah], the floods [nahar], the brooks [nachal] of honey [dabash] and butter [chem'ah]. KJV-Interlinear

Happiness is the ultimate goal of everyone. Happiness is a feeling of pleasure, contentment, joy, and fulfillment. It is a completeness within ones self which indicates that you have arrived at some point of satisfaction.

Some pursue their happiness through their five senses of life. Things, which they have defined as being their happiness, but these things never achieve happiness. And, in fact, they become ones frantic search for happiness. A frantic search, which never achieves its goal.

The poisons of asps and cobras, vipers and such, represent the poisons of life which people actually are accumulating in their life as a result of their rejection of Gods Word.

The honeys and butters of life, represent the phenomenal prosperities, which are available, or of which people desire. But this prosperity is elusive when they reject God and substitute the poisons of the world for the wisdom of doctrine.

Poisonous snakes do not produce great wealth. Their venom is the production of evil and ruin and death.

Real prosperity comes from non-poisonous sources such as vineyards, and gardens, from planted fields, and commerce. All of these represent examples of the normal functions of a wise society. Rejecting them is the function of selfish and unwise society.

And rejection of God, of Christ, and of Bible doctrine, all three of which are the foundations of the spiritual life, will lead the person to disaster. Pursuing God, Christ and doctrine will result in success.

The poisons of life, the rejection of truth, is poison.

The prosperity of life is represented in the form of flooding brooks, streams, and rivers, because that is what God offers everyone who pursues truth.

On ones own, those brooks, streams, and rivers of happiness never come into existence. Happiness is ever elusive, and the pleasures of life, no matter how you define them (food, drink, drugs, sex, crime, money, power, fame, etc.), will never be achieved. Even what you have, you don't really have, because everything in this world is temporary, and one day you will leave this world and everything you had will stay behind.

After death, then Gods unlimited prosperity will be revealed, but to those who rejected Him in life, even that great beyond dreams prosperity, will not exist.

Gods promises come to you in the form of floods, with so much volume that you cannot possibly comprehend it all.

The worlds promise of success comes to you in the form of one fatal snakebite, with a volume so small, you just can't believe it. And you can't believe it, because you don't.
