Joel 1:4-6

Lesson # Joel 1:4-6
Study Material - Joel 1:4-6

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Joel 1:4-6

4 That which the palmerworm [gazam] hath left [yether] hath the locust [arbeh] eaten [akal] ; and that which the locust [arbeh] hath left [yether] hath the cankerworm [yekeq] eaten [akal] ; and that which the cankerworm [yekeq] hath left [yether] hath the caterpiller [chaciyl] eaten [akal] .
5 Awake [quwts] , ye drunkards [shikkowr] , and weep [bakah] ; and howl [yalal] , all ye drinkers [shathah] of wine [yayin] , because of the new wine [aciyc] ; for it is cut off [karath] from your mouth [peh] .
6 For a nation [gowy] is come up [alah] upon my land ['erets] , strong [atsuwm] , and without number [micpar] , whose teeth [shen] are the teeth [shen] of a lion [ariy] , and he hath the cheek teeth [mathalla`ah] of a great lion [labiy] . KJV-Interlinear

4 What the gnawing locust has left, the swarming locust has eaten; And what the swarming locust has left, the creeping locust has eaten; And what the creeping locust has left, the stripping locust has eaten. 5 Awake, drunkards, and weep; And wail, all you wine drinkers, On account of the sweet wine That is cut off from your mouth. 6 For a nation has invaded my land, Mighty and without number; Its teeth are the teeth of a lion, And it has the fangs of a lioness. NASB

In each one of our lives, the thing that we should fear the absolute most, is the absence of Bible doctrine. If doctrine is not available, then we cannot learn, cannot grow, cannot have a relationship with God. We would be without protection of any kind, without any rescuer. Life would be totally hopeless.

Joel's generation (any generation for that matter) had Gods word available to them, but they chose to ignore it. They pursued their 'wine.' Was this a generation of drunks? No. Joel did call them drunkards, but they were not intoxicated with alcohol. They were, however intoxicated with their chosen life style, whatever it might have been for each individual. It just excluded God. No time for Him.

If your social life, your professional life, your education, your personal entertainment, your goals, your hobbies, your relationships whatever they may be, if any of these and many more things of this life which I haven't mentioned, are more important to you than God, if you choose these things and ignore God 'totally' then you have a problem.

What was Joel's generation's problem? Their worst problem? They did not recognize that they had a problem!

They were oblivious to their principle problem. Sure they recognized the usual earthly problems - paying the bills, conducting business, social problems, personal problems and so forth, but their really big problem was their spiritual problem, and that one escaped them. If you don't see it, hear it, feel it, taste it, smell it, then it must not be a big deal! Right?

Then along comes a little locust. So small that one can crush it under the foot. But when those little critters begin to number in the gazillions, when they cover the sky like thick black smoke, then you have a really big problem.

Prov. 30:27
27 The locusts have no king, Yet all of them go out in ranks; NASB

Joel describes four different locusts. The swarm, 'gazam,' great locusts, 'arbeh,' young locusts, 'yekeq,' and other locusts, 'chaciyl.' This is a reference to their total and thorough destruction. Nothing is left behind after they have come through. There is only heartache and misery and total loss. Ignore God and you'll lose everything. And, you'll lose it the hard way.

That is the state of a person who ignores their Bible study. That is the state of a person who is indifferent to their Bible study. That is the ultimate expectation of a person who rationalizes that he/she can get along in life without Bible doctrine in their soul. That is the state of a person who thinks that they can skip a few days, then catch up.

How many of us will skip our meals for a few days? How many of us make sure that we have our meals, or at the very least, some type of snack everyday? All of us do. Our priorities are wrong if we skip our Bible study even for one day.

Additionally, how many of us clean ourselves each day, perhaps even several times a day - potty time, washing the hands or face, a shower, a bath (at least once a week whether we need it or not???)

Personal hygiene is part of our daily life. So too, is our fellowship with God (or it should be). This is where self examination comes into play. No you're not checking for lumps. This self examination is for sin in your life. Your cleansing is your confession of sin to God the Father. You check yourself daily (perhaps several times a day) and clean yourself up, and keep yourself clean (in fellowship). That is where your spiritual life functions.

You were created to live for billions and trillions and gazillions of years, forever, with God. Your life here on earth is intended to get you ready for that life. Obviously faith in Christ is the first priority. Then spiritual growth comes next. Everything else in life is mere logistical support to get you through this life. You need a body to walk and talk, a brain to think, an education so you won't be stupid, a job to pay the bills, a social life to understand that there are other people out there, and so forth.

These things are not the priority of life. Bible study is, or should be. Your Bible study needs to be attended to everyday. You do not have to become a hermit, don't run off to a monastery, or some such thing like that. You do need to keep God ever in the fore front of your mind however. That will help you get through this life and prepare you for the next.

Lest you get invaded by a nation, without number, the overwhelming distractions which are in this world and any of which can tear your life apart with teeth like that of the lioness. The worlds jaws are powerful and will, if you give them a chance, tear you apart.

There is nothing in this world which you should fear, except losing God in your life. That should terrify you totally. If it doesn't, then you either should wake up and begin to learn that which you don't know (Bible doctrine), or you will wake up one day with a miserable life and wonder what happened.

The more you place your happiness, trust, or well being, in the gratification of the senses, then the more power the problems of this world will have on you.

Why does the Bible say, 'Study to show thyself approved ...' What exactly does that mean? How else can one become approved? The answer to that is, there is no other way.

End of lesson.

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
