Joel 1:11-12

Lesson # Joel 1:11-12
Study Material - Joel 1:11-12

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Joel 1:11-12

11 Be ye ashamed [yabesh] , O ye husbandmen [ikkar] ; howl [yalal] , O ye vinedressers [korem] , for the wheat [chittah] and for the barley [sa`orah] ; because the harvest [qatsiyr] of the field [sadeh] is perished ['abad] .
12 The vine [gephen] is dried up [yabesh] , and the fig tree [ta'en] languisheth ['amal] ; the pomegranate [rimmown] tree, the palm tree [tamar] also, and the apple tree [tappuwach] , even all the trees [ets] of the field [sadeh] , are withered [yabesh] : because joy [sasown] is withered away [yabesh] from the sons [ben] of men [adam] . KJV-Interlinear

11 Be ashamed, O farmers, Wail, O vinedressers, For the wheat and the barley; Because the harvest of the field is destroyed. 12 The vine dries up, And the fig tree fails; The pomegranate, the palm also, and the apple tree, All the trees of the field dry up. Indeed, rejoicing dries up From the sons of men. NASB

The production of life is gone. The basics. The common grains which go into the daily flours and breads for all people, the common as well as the higher classes of people, are all gone. The rarer delicacies of life the pomegranate and the apple, which only the well to do can afford, are also gone.

There is no wine, no new wine for the wine cellars. No wine for the coming year when the old wine runs out. Even the old wine is gone, as the invading hordes (the jungle) have taken away everything that was stored up.

Everyone laments. Everyone is in tears because of their loss. There is no more rejoicing, no more little jokes of life, no more ridicule of those who were serious about their faith (few as they were). There was no more urgency in attaining the good things in life, no more intense focus on ones career. There was no more social gatherings, no more parties, no more weekend entertainment, no more planning and striving for goals. There was no more counting the days to retirement, until school is out, until the next big event in the life. There was no more being too busy in life.

Now it is all gone.

We have been about three straight days, I think, on the dismal aspects of life, but why is it that way? Our study is Revelation. And specifically in chapter 14. We have taken a side trip to Joel to study the 'Day of the Lord.' Which by the way is not a dinner party at Gods house. The Day of the Lord will be the most horrifying day in all of human history. It will be sheer terror for those who are on the receiving end of Gods wrath, and it will be awesome for those (few) who are being rescued. But the Day of the Lord is not reserved only for the Second Advent, everyone will have their own Day of the Lord at the moment of their death. That is when their life ceases and from there, there will be no do overs.

Too often people will simply float through life. They are oblivious to God, His Word, and certainly their own spiritual life. Most folks are simply indifferent. They live from day to day and nothing really dramatic happens to them. Sure things happen to 'other' folks. We see it on TV all the time. But not to us!

We study and graduate. We enter our career or new life with high hopes, with the excitement of anticipation. We look forward to having the things we imagine we should have. We look to retirement and the easy and good life.

Then life happens. We have worked hard all our life (the farmers, the vinedressers). We have struggled through life making ends meet, paying the bills, getting behind, getting ahead, and then we come face to face with the end of our life. When we are young we are full of vinegar. We see not too far beyond the toys we enjoy playing with. We invest all our energies in the things we want out of life.

But we forget the one thing that will carry us not only through this life, but into and beyond the next life - that is our spiritual life.

God gives us fair warning. God intensifies the warnings from time to time just to get our attention. God looks inside our soul and measures the depth of our spiritual growth.

God finds a lack of joy. People place their joy on the 'things' of the life, but true joy comes from Bible doctrine, not things. When trouble comes, then all the joy (temporary) one once had is gone and is replaced with sorrow.

The land is Judea. It is the location of Jerusalem. Inside Jerusalem is Mt. Zion. Mt. Zion is the mountain of doctrine which comes from God. The city (with doctrine inside of it), is the city of peace, Gods peace, Gods rest, Gods contentment.

There were offerings morning and evening. There were gifts to the Temple, to make these offerings of thanks. But why then the disaster and destruction? Because the gifts, those that were given, were not from the heart, but from some other ulterior motive, for appearances). Many did not even bother to give, to support the teaching of Gods Word, to help charity. Why give? Others can do that!

So God looks down and sees the greed and selfishness, and decides that since there is no giving, no thanks, no gratitude, then people should have nothing in order to understand what having anything, really means. Thus the locusts. The attack of the jungle of life.

If priorities are not straight in ones life, then the occurrence of disaster in ones life is only a matter of time. You'll take note that the common thread through Joel, is the lack of legitimate giving for thanks. Where spiritual growth is lacking, the gifts are also lacking. Too many excuses in the life. Not enough for us, so cannot give to others. We'll see more on this tomorrow.

End of lesson.

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
