Joel 2:1a

Lesson # Joel 2:1a
Study Material - Joel 2:1a

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Joel 2:1a

1 Blow [taqa] ye the trumpet [showphar] in Zion [Tsiyown] , and sound an alarm [ruwa] in my holy [qodesh] mountain [har] : let all the inhabitants [yashab] of the land [erets] tremble [ragaz] : for the day [yowm] of the LORD [Yahovah] cometh [bow] , for it is nigh at hand [qarowb] ; KJV-Interlinear

1 Blow a trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm on My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, For the day of the LORD is coming; Surely it is near, NASB

In the first chapter we saw the results of a negative population. Negative toward God that is. People were going about their day to day business (activities that people consider important to themselves, to the exclusion of God in their lives). Unfortunately any attention given to God was more out of convenience or courtesy, rather than true worship.

This attitude results in a phony life. God is not wanted, so God pulls back, and that means people are on their own. Suddenly a small little creature (by the millions) comes along and devastates the nation. Normally God would have brought the appropriate predator to the locust, and its number would not have increased. Nature would remain in balance. But then man thinks so highly of himself, unfortunately someone just forgot to check the 'natures balance index' for locusts, and so their population grew and invaded the nation - destroying the economy and the lives of the entire population.

'Oh, well that is just a freak event of nature. These things happen.' Or so many folks would say. People will come up with all sorts of explanations for their problems or the problems of the world.

Now in chapter two we have a further description of the horrors of Gods wrath. A wrath which is really brought on by man ignoring God, and thus exposing himself to all the trouble of the world. A world which man cannot possibly control. All the governmental rules and regulations, all the environmental laws, all the economic theories, all the philosophies of mankind mean nothing when they attempt to deal with the adverse conditions that are thrown at mankind from the world.

Man cannot create better conditions for himself. Man cannot control his own environment. History is full of examples of mans attempts to control his environment - social, economic, political, whatever, and the results of them all. The ultimate example of mans failure will come in the Tribulation, when God is completely (well almost completely) rejected by the entire world.

Chapter two issues a call for repentance (a change of attitude) toward God, a call to fast (a separation from the sin nature pattern of life), a call to prayer (the fellowship function or pattern of life) with God, and the seeking of Gods mercy (grace in action) or the return to Gods provision.

Upon mans repentance, God will remove the judgment, will repair the various breaches in life caused by the judgment, and restore the people to prosperity. God is the source of everything good. There is nothing man can do to add to that which God does. There is nothing man can do to take away or alter that which God does.

Then Joel makes a prediction of the setting up of Gods kingdom wherein the Holy Spirit will be poured out onto mankind, bringing tremendous prosperity and fellowship as never before in history, during those future days of the Millennium.

But first in verse one, the sound of the trumpet. The alarm goes out to all the nation. Warning is issued to all because the enemy is advancing and is at the door. And that is where we will begin our study of chapter two tomorrow.

End of lesson.

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
