Joel 3:19-21

Lesson # Joel 3:19-21
Study Material - Joel 3:19-21

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Joel 3:19-21

19 Egypt [Mitsrayim] shall be a desolation [shamamah] , and Edom [Edom] shall be a desolate [shamamah] wilderness [midbar] , for the violence [chamac] against the children [ben] of Judah [Yahuwdah] , because they have shed [shaphak] innocent [naqiy] blood [dam] in their land [erets] .
20 But Judah [Yahuwdah] shall dwell [yashab] for ever [owlam] , and Jerusalem [Yaruwshalaim] from generation [dowr] to generation [dowr] .
21 For I will cleanse [naqah] their blood [dam] that I have not cleansed [naqah] : for the LORD [Yahovah] dwelleth [shakan] in Zion [Tsiyown] . KJV-Interlinear

19 Egypt will become a waste, And Edom will become a desolate wilderness, Because of the violence done to the sons of Judah, In whose land they have shed innocent blood. 20 But Judah will be inhabited forever, And Jerusalem for all generations. 21 And I will avenge their blood which I have not avenged, For the LORD dwells in Zion. NASB

Those who have been, or are to be, delivered, are to recall or make inquiry of the details, of that deliverance, so that they will know, and understand, and not make the same mistakes that their rival enemies made.

Egypt represents the land of slavery (sin and death for mankind). Edom represents the rejection of salvation as Esau rejected God for a single meal, while Jacob (mentioned by implication), Esau's brother, represents choosing for God and His plan for salvation through faith in the promised savior, the Son of God, (Jesus Christ).
We have already studied that Joshua is the Hebrew equivalent of Jesus (Greek), and that the word Messiah, is the Hebrew equivalent of the word Christ, which is the Greek word from the New Testament. So, Joshua Messiah, is the same as Jesus Christ.

The result of mans decisions? If for God, then there is life in Judah, the chosen land and realm of God, and Jerusalem, is the chosen city of peace, which simply means that if you are positive toward God and grow up spiritually in the proper way, then you will have doctrine inside of your soul, transforming your thinking into that which God wants you to think. Doctrine is represented by Zion, the mountain and vast expanse of Gods Word.

Doctrine is the ultimate source for the completed spiritual life. It creates an environment (city) or complete contentment, prosperity, peace (Jerusalem), and this all resides within the boundaries of Gods realm of heaven (Judah).

Now, if one were to choose against God, then they will find themselves as strangers to God, and living in a strange land - Edom or Egypt. Both of which represent life outside of the sphere of Gods positive control (the Lake of Fire). This is the desolate and destroyed land which produces nothing, has nothing, is totally destitute of everything. It is a place where one will live in total poverty, total misery, total pain, and total suffering far beyond that which anyone can even imagine.

We studied the Lake of Fire some time ago, and I think I have a special study on the Web site covering that subject. Suffice to say, Hell is not a pretty place. If you can imagine a place where you would be totally alone, never seeing anyone. You would be buried, as it were, in a coffin complete with all the maggots and worms gnawing on you, in total darkness, trapped. Not a pretty picture, and worse yet, there is no way out, no one to rescue you, you'll never leave that perpetual terror. Gnashing of teeth and tears, and extreme fear are the descriptions the Bible gives us. There will be no booze, no rounds of jokes, no camaraderie of friends, no cigars, and no virgins. Don't be fooled into believing something that will never exist. It will be too late to change your mind once you have arrived in hell and discover its horror and your total helplessness.

So, of Edom, and of Egypt, do not reject God else there will be nothing for you. Nothing ever.

Meanwhile, of Judah and those who will reside there. God will avenge, which here really means to cleanse, to wipe away, to expunge the filth which once was, but will be as though it had never been. God will wipe clean all our flaws, all our sins, all our failures, all our weaknesses, everything which can be construed as negative in our life. All will be erased from our life and these things will never follow us into eternity. Furthermore, they will be forgotten. God won't remember them, and neither will you have a memory of the bad things of this life.

Why? Because God lives in truth (Zion). He has said it, He has promised it, therefore it will be done.

We have completed the book of Joel. I'll bet most of you, never imagined that there was so much doctrine within this book. I'll bet that most of you probably had forgotten that there was a book by that name within the Old Testament. I wonder if you can even name the sixteen prophets who have books named after them in the Old Testament. Now try to write them down and then look them up in your Bible contents page. No cheating.

One of the principles taught in Joel is that you should want to know, and want to know more and more of Gods Word. If you do not know, then you should want to investigate and find out everything that you can know. That is the beginning of wisdom in your life. It is not something that you can learn overnight. We have had 33 lessons on this book of Joel. So it took us a little over a month to complete. Can you recall all that we learned?
The locusts, and what they stand for? The darkening of the sky from horizon to horizon, and what that stands for? The desolation resulting from the invasion, and why the invasion came in the first place? The gift offerings and their meanings? The two valleys we studied and their meanings? The repercussions of your decisions and the two options you have for life?

Though the historical events of this book have occurred in the past, in Joel's day, and the historical events of the future Day of the Lord have not yet come, we still have our daily life to live and the decisions which God expects of us. Your life's sum total is not of this world, but this life is merely a preparation for the next life.

We now sit in the Valley of Shittim, in preparation for the crossing over into the next life into the Promised Land, as it were. Will you prepare properly? Will you look across the river Jordan (the barrier dividing the immature life from the mature life - the barrier dividing the present life from the eternal life) and see the promises beyond? Or will you stay in the valley and succumb to the curses of Balaam?

Who is that you ask? Well, at least there is a question now. That's good.

End of lesson.

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
