Jonah 1:13-14

13 Nevertheless the men [enowsh] rowed hard [chathar] to bring [shuwb] it to the land [yabbashah]; but they could [yakol] not: for the sea [yam] wrought [halak], and was tempestuous [ca`ar] against them.
14 Wherefore they cried [qara] unto the LORD [Yahovah], and said [amar], We beseech thee [anna], O LORD [Yahovah], we beseech thee, let us not perish [abad] for this man's [iysh] life [nephesh], and lay [nathan] not upon us innocent [naqiy] [naqiy] blood [dam]: for thou, O LORD [Yahovah], hast done [asah] as it pleased [chaphets] thee. KJV-Interlinear

13 However, the men rowed desperately to return to land but they could not, for the sea was becoming even stormier against them. 14 Then they called on the LORD and said, 'We earnestly pray, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man's life and do not put innocent blood on us; for Thou, O LORD, hast done as Thou hast pleased.' NASB

The men of the ship have been told the truth. One man must die in order that they all may be saved. Their own superstitions told them this, and Jonah has told them. This is all a lesson in the principle of salvation caused by the Lord in order to save men (all men, not just Israelites) from their own sins and ultimately from the perils of the world.

The men, like typical unbelievers, rejected the truth, even though it was corroborated by both opinions - of the world and of God.

Like typical unbelievers also, they rowed in pursuit of a losing effort. The wind and the sea were and are too great for mankind to do battle with. God and God alone (Jesus Christ) controls the sea. And no other deity (all false of course) can control anything let alone the sea.

Yet the men rowed for their own lives. If they could only reach shore, then they would be safe. But in this life, there is no dry land to row to. All of mankind are caught in the ocean storms of their sin nature, of sin, and of death. Out of this trap there is no escape. No matter what we discover or invent, mankind will never attain eternal life on their own. Mankind will never reach a level sufficient to commune with God one on one. Mankind will never be able to control the elements of this planet let alone the universe. The recent tsunami should provide an excellent example of mans inability to prevent or control nature.

Yet the men kept on rowing. Mans effort to make himself right with God and with his own environment will never succeed.

They kept rowing. They rejected the truth which was explained to them all, and they understood it. The storm grew worse, and they had no control over their environment. All of their lives were in the hands of a higher power and they refused to relinquish to that power. Unbelievers think that they can somehow overcome their difficulties on their own, yet thousands of years of history prove that man cannot overcome anything on his own.

All peoples who have lived in past generations are all dead. And all current and future generations will also die. No miracle cure for death will ever be discovered by mankind.

They rowed 'hard.' They put all of their life's energy into their own plan for saving themselves. Mankind can never save himself. Likewise, mankind once saved by believing in the Savior, can never grow up spiritually on his own. The spiritual life too is the sovereign domain of God.

Finally they stopped rowing, realizing that their efforts were futile. They now pray to the one true God, leaving their own false gods and recognizing that God and God alone is the one who will answer their prayer and save them all.

They are reluctant to search out salvation by means of throwing Jonah overboard, yet this is Gods command and plan. God and God alone has a plan to save mankind. Man cannot alter, modify, or change that plan. The plan (the Cross) was thought up and designed by God in eternity past.

God is not pleased with mans efforts to save himself. Man doesn't have that ability. God is pleased with mans compliance to His plan and with mans placing his own faith in Gods plan. God is all knowing and all powerful. God does that which is in our best interest - namely accomplishing eternal life and numerous blessings beyond that.

Though man in selfish ignorance ('They know not what they do.') will send Jesus Christ to the Cross, that is the means of salvation, and even in mans failure, God can work out good in behalf of mankind.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
