Jonah 2:9-10

9 But I will sacrifice [zabach] unto thee with the voice [qowl] of thanksgiving [towdah]; I will pay [shalam] that that I have vowed [nadar]. Salvation [yashuw`ah] is of the LORD [Yahovah].
10 And the LORD [Yahovah] spake [amar] unto the fish [dag], and it vomited out [qow] Jonah [Yonah] upon the dry [yabbashah] land. KJV-Interlinear

9 But I will sacrifice to Thee With the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the LORD. ' 10 Then the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land. NASB

A sacrifice is an offering of some sort to a deity to appease. Jonah is inside the fish so a burnt offering of some sort is not really a practical thing. Besides he is in no position to make that kind of sacrifice. Here Jonah is talking of the sacrifice of soul. His attitude is the sacrifice. Giving up his old sin nature attitude in exchange for the higher pattern of thinking which God offers us all through our study of His Word.

Jonah emphasizes his thanksgiving, for all that God has done for him despite his own failures. God had commanded Jonah to do something which he detested. Jonah did not like the gentiles. His own personal prejudice. He saw gentiles as creatures beneath his own dignity.

Next Jonah ran away when God commanded him to go and warn the gentiles of their evil ways. Why warn them? After all they are heathens, so just blast them away and be done with it!!

Jonah does not see his own actions as nothing less than imitations of the actions of common unbelievers, and yet Jonah was a believer in the Lord. How is he any better?

God has to teach Jonah a lesson. First God is the God of all of mankind, not just the descendants of Abraham. Remember that Abraham was descended from Noah as we all are, and genetics is not an advantage worthy of boasting about. The spiritual realm is not a part of this temporal world.

Anyone can gain access to their spiritual life if they are obedient to Gods mechanisms for advancing in their spiritual life - salvation, study, etc. This method is open to all people, Jew and Gentile alike.

We all make sacrifice to God when we conduct ourselves inside of our spiritual life. We study, we learn, we apply what we learn to our life, we grow up spiritually and we repeat this cycle of wisdom over and over again and again throughout our lives. This is our individual sacrifice or offering of faith and compliance and obedience to God. The sacrifice of goats and bulls means nothing. Your attitude of soul is everything.

Eternal life comes from God. Our access to eternal life comes from God. Our spiritual life comes from God.

Of these there is no other source, no other alternative. We either follow that which is taught in the Bible and succeed in our spiritual life, or we don't follow what is taught in the Bible, in which case we will fail in our spiritual life, and fail in life in general.

Suffering in this life is limited. God allows us the freedom to be stupid and He also allows us to suffer for the bad decisions we make in life. But sooner or later if we recover our senses and turn to God, then the disciplinary suffering will cease.

Jonah was in the fish for three days and three nights. For 72 hours he thought he was a goner. Some folks live their entire life inside the belly of the fish. They just don't recognize their predicament.

Jonah's life was flashing before his own eyes, yet that flash was extended for three days and nights.

Look at your life and list out the many failures you have had and the suffering you have experienced because of them. And how many days and nights have you lived? For most of you those days and nights will extend into the decades. And yet you are still alive. The question is, 'When will we ever learn our lesson?'

Again, salvation (eternal life), deliverance (from the problems of life), and the spiritual life (from a daily study program, etc.) all come from God and God alone. By ignoring your Bible study, you will never gain any of these on your own or from any other source.

Then when God is through with your stubbornness and you begin to humble yourself, the fish will barf you up and back into the daylight of life. The fish is your discipline, your instruction, and your suffering, your humility or humiliation, all wrapped up into one nice neat package.

You always have the right to learn the easy way in life or the hard way.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
