You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Jonah 3:7-9

7 And he caused it to be proclaimed [za`aq] and published [amar] through Nineveh [Niynaveh] by the decree [ta`am] of the king [melek] and his nobles [gadowl], saying [amar], Let neither man [adam] nor beast [bahemah], herd [baqar] nor flock [tso'n], taste [ta`am] any thing [mauwmah]: let them not feed [ra`ah], nor drink [shathah] water [mayim]:
8 But let man [adam] and beast [bahemah] be covered [kacah] with sackcloth [saq], and cry [qara' mightily [chozqah] unto God ['elohiym]: yea, let them turn [shuwb] every one [iysh] from his evil [ra] way [derek], and from the violence [chamac] that is in their hands [kaph].
9 Who can tell [yada] if God [elohiym] will turn [shuwb] and repent [nacham], and turn away [shuwb] from his fierce [charown] anger [aph], that we perish [abad] not? KJV-Interlinear

7 And he issued a proclamation and it said, 'In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man, beast, herd, or flock taste a thing. Do not let them eat or drink water. 8 'But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and let men call on God earnestly that each may turn from his wicked way and from the violence which is in his hands. 9 'Who knows, God may turn and relent, and withdraw His burning anger so that we shall not perish?' NASB

The king issued a very stringent order. All people were to fast. And, not only the people, but they were to apply the order to their animals too.

This may seem a bit unusual, but having all people and their animals go on a fast, and in addition, having them all wear the rough sackcloth clothing, is a very good representation of what God expects of you in your spiritual life.

Remember that the spiritual life is absent of sin of any and every type. No sin in the spiritual life. Thus the need to confess on a regular basis so that you will be in fellowship.

Fasting is excluding food and drink from your diet. You go without for a while in order to bring your attention to God and not on the foods, or things, of this world. Fasting represents your excluding sin from your life and living inside of the fellowship sphere. Fasting is a teaching aid to teach fellowship. Fasting is not the spiritual life. You do not have to fast in order to be spiritual.

But you do have to know what fellowship is and how to obtain it - confession of sin.

Issuing the order to all people and to all animals teaches the importance of the spiritual life. It is a mandatory command from God. It is not an optional decision, buy a mandatory one. The spiritual life functions only from inside the fellowship sphere, apart from sin.

Psa. 66:18
18 If I regard wickedness in my heart, The Lord will not hear; NASB

Isa. 58:6
6 'Is this not the fast which I choose, To loosen the bonds of wickedness, To undo the bands of the yoke, And to let the oppressed go free, And break every yoke? NASB

Zech. 7:5
5 'Say to all the people of the land and to the priests, 'When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months these seventy years, was it actually for Me that you fasted? NASB

In fasting there is no room for whining for the things of this world. A person fasts and he sooner or later gets hungry and thirsty. One cannot have the philosophy of the world (anything, any belief which is anti-God or anti-scripture). Alternate life styles are prohibited for example, even though people will try to justify them in their own minds.

By fasting you sooner or later will desire food. By living the spiritual life you will always be tempted to go back to the temporal life style which appeals more to your senses.

The city was about to be destroyed. Your life is the same as the city. They had forty days to get their act together. You have your life span whatever length it might be. Some of us live just a few years, and some of us live into our 90's. Makes no difference how long you live. The thing is, you do not know what your check out date is. Could be tomorrow. Could be decades from now. God often allows us to live extended years just to give us a chance to get our spiritual life together. If we fail, then it is our fault. Failure is always our fault.

The length of your stay here on earth is not the issue. The issue is that you understand that it is imperative that you get your spiritual act together because your decisions affect your life and no matter how long you will live, you do not have that much time to waste.

Indifference, apathy, being too busy for God at the moment, waiting until you have more time in your life and so on and so forth are all weak excuses, and they demonstrate your stupidity. Time is running and you are either on the path to spiritual success or you are not.

All of your eternal life depends on your decisions today, and tomorrow, and the next day, and the next and so on for the rest of your life.

Who knows what God will do for you? You know. If you get with your spiritual life, then you will succeed both now in time, and in eternity. But if you choose to ignore your spiritual life, if you choose to disregard the importance of your spiritual life, if you do not think the spiritual side of life worthy of your immediate attention, then you are the fool and you will lose out in life.
