Jonah 4:1

1 But it displeased [yara] Jonah [Yonah] exceedingly [gadowl] [ra], and he was very angry [charah]. KJV-Interlinear

1 But it greatly displeased Jonah, and he became angry. NASB

The population of the city is huge - many hundreds of thousands of people. People are more important than anything else on this planet. More important than plants. More important than animals.

People are living souls who have forever life. We all will live forever either in the Lake of Fire, or preferably with eternal life, we'll live forever in heaven. Living forever in the Lake of Fire is not a good thing. Trust me.

This principle should be obvious, but sometimes when our prejudices, or our emotions, or our over thinking brain get in the way we do not see the obvious.

Ok, I don't often do this, but here is a joke which I received via e-mail. You all probably have already received this joke, but just in case ... Actually this joke has some very good principles of common sense in it. Besides I thought it was one of the better jokes I have received. But, please don't send me your jokes!

The Lone Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert.
After they got their tent all set up, both men went inside of the tent and fell sound asleep.

Some hours later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and says, 'Kemo Sabe, look towards sky, what you see?'
The Lone Ranger replies, 'I see millions of stars.'
'What that tell you?' asked Tonto.
The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says,
'Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.
Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo.
Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three in the morning.
Theologically, it's evident the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant.
Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.

What's it tell you, Tonto?'
Tonto is silent for a moment, then says, 'Kemo Sabe, you dumber than buffalo doo-doo.'
'Somebody stole tent !!!'

Ok! I thought it was pretty good. Anyway, Jonah was in the city to give them a warning concerning their doom, which by the way was just forty days away. Jonah was there to offer the people a chance of avoiding doom. In other words - salvation.

But what Jonah really had in mind was being there to see everyone suffer horribly and fall into some huge bottomless pit, or something like that. He just wanted to see them all hurt big time for their evil deeds.

But the population repented (changed their minds) concerning God and His gospel message. And when the forty days were up, Jonah fully expected to see the city blow up. It didn't.

Jonah is mad now. 'How dare God send him all this way and no big dramatic disaster occurs.' 'Doesn't God know that he (Jonah) has better things to do with his time? Like, well like something else anyway?'

Jonah was a prophet, a teacher of doctrine. His purpose in life was to bring Gods counsel to people so that they might have a better life. His job was not to determine who was worthy or not. That is Gods sovereign prerogative

Why is Jonah displeased to the point of anger? Because he is arrogant, self centered, prejudiced, and down right wrong in his attitude toward people. Jonah was a prophet with a lot to learn.

When bad things happen to people we should not jump up and cheer. We can never get ahead nor advance in our spiritual life at the expense of others difficulties.

When good things happen to people we should not be envious or jealous of them. Certainly we should not hate them for their good fortune. But this happens often in the gossip corners of life. People set up standards (their own standards) by which they believe (opinionated) and expect others to follow their lead. Many folks are simply jealous of others. In either case hate usually evolves and the criticism, the gossip, the maliciousness begins, and it is all out of line.

Far too often people do not live and let live, but they want to get into the lives of others and tell them what or what not to do. That is Gods job. And the evaluation is also Gods job. And, by the way, all of the opinions that you'll hear in the gossip centers, do not exist in the scriptures as legitimate principles of doctrine or truth. When you try to impose your beliefs onto others, or when you try to impose your judgment against others, then you are out of line.

Jonah was there to warn and to give the alternatives for both good and bad decisions. People had the right to make smart decisions or dumb decisions. God will determine who is going to be blessed and who is going to be cursed.

Why did Jonah get angry? Why was Jonah disappointed at not seeing judgment? Well, Jonah has his priorities mixed up and that lesson is coming up in this chapter. I wonder if Jonah ever saw a buffalo?

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
