Josh. 2:15-16

Lesson # Josh. 2:15-16
Study Material - Josh. 2:15-16

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Josh. 2:15-16

15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was on the city wall, so that she was living on the wall. 16 And she said to them, 'Go to the hill country, lest the pursuers happen upon you, and hide yourselves there for three days, until the pursuers return. Then afterward you may go on your way.'

Rahab's home was on the city outer wall. This allowed for their escape through a window and down a rope to the outside ground below. God always provides us with a means of escape, even if we find ourselves surrounded by an enemy who seeks nothing good for us.

These men were in danger of execution as spies if caught. We in our daily lives have enemies as well. The four great enemies are: our own thoughts, other people, bureaucratic systems, and natural disasters. Almost everything in life follow these four categories with respect to problems in our individual lives. These then are the testing grounds for each of us, and they are the areas where we need to be alert to, so that we can keep our thoughts and lives pure (sin free), and maintain our fellowship with God.

These men were in a military situation. Not many of us will be in that kind of situation in our lifetime, but we still have enemies surrounding us nonetheless. God always gives us a way out of our situation. A rope and a window. All we have to do is look around and see the window and the rope, listen to the good advice of doctrine (Rahab's advice to the men), and apply the correct decision to our lives.

God brings all things together for us to follow. He provided Rahab. He provided her with a home on the outer wall. He brought the two men to Rahab in the midst of all those who were in Jericho. They would have never found her on their own. They would never have even known that she existed or that anyone positive toward God lived in the city. These men knew the warning from Deut. 7:2, which God gave explicitly forbidding any agreements with the peoples of Canaan. Their destruction was ordered. Their total destruction was ordered. But place this in the context of the type of peoples that lived in Canaan. They were extremely degenerate. This doesn't mean that their might be someone in the land who was positive, and God will care for them as He cares for any believer who is positive and advancing in their spiritual life.

Rahab and her family were positive, therefore they would be protected. The spies were right to offer her protection because of the help she has given them. But she would have to follow their instruction to the letter in order to receive her deliverance. Joshua would be told of these events and Joshua would agree and advise the nation of Israel of this agreement. Everyone would know the name of Rahab, except of course those in Jericho.

Rahab offers good advise. There are people out on the main road watching for these two men. SO she advises they go off road and into the hills avoiding the possibility of meeting anyone. And since most everyone is in the city behind its closed gates, shaking in their booties, these men would not likely run into anyone out in the hills. After the scouts come back to Jericho, then they would be safe and could return to the Jordan and cross over.

Rahab knew that the Jews were just across the river. That was common knowledge. They might not have known exactly where the Jews were, but the people in Jericho knew that they were out there somewhere and were coming to visit real soon.

We have our responsibilities in life. God does not spoon feed us, but gave us intelligence, despite the fact that some act like they were absent the day God handed out intelligence. Anyway, we have responsibilities to take the necessary precautions in life to secure ourselves. We lock our doors in our homes. We don't go down dark alleys in the big city at midnight. We don't run across the busy highway expecting that God will keep the cars from splattering us into next week. We do go to school. We do look for work. We do clean our house. We do take care of our kids. We do brush our teeth. The list goes on and on.

We do not go looking for danger when we can avoid it. These men had a responsibility to Joshua to get information and return. To be reckless and endanger themselves would have been irresponsible. Likewise we in our lives do not take reckless paths. We do not bet the farm on a lottery ticket. We don't chase the get rich schemes to the demise of our family. We use common sense and prioritize our lives. We budget our expenses. We save for that rainy day. We curb our desires to have perhaps the nicer things in life, things that we do not have. We trust in God to provide and we follow the normal course of our life, but always having doctrine first in our thoughts and in our daily Bible study routine.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
