Josh. 3:11-17

Lesson # Josh. 3:11-17
Study Material - Josh. 3:11-17

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Josh. 3:11-17

11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is crossing over ahead of you into the Jordan. 12 Now then, take for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man for each tribe. 13 And it shall come about when the soles of the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, and the waters which are flowing down from above shall stand in one heap.' 14 So it came about when the people set out from their tents to cross the Jordan with the priests carrying the ark of the covenant before the people, 15 and when those who carried the ark came into the Jordan, and the feet of the priests carrying the ark were dipped in the edge of the water (for the Jordan overflows all its banks all the days of harvest), 16 that the waters which were flowing down from above stood and rose up in one heap, a great distance away at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan; and those which were flowing down toward the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were completely cut off. So the people crossed opposite Jericho. 17 And the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan while all Israel crossed on dry ground, until all the nation had finished crossing the Jordan.

Art last the crossing of the Jordan. When the Israelites crossed the Red Sea, they were under attack. The Egyptians were being held off by a pillar of fire. The sea rose up with walls on either side, thus the passage from the land of sin into the land of safety is protected from attack from without, and through the crossing over into spiritual safety.

The world is the land of Egypt. The temptations to ignore God and return to that evil place are great. Sometimes the fear of intimidation and the willingness to submit to masters provides a great pressure making it seem easy to go back to the pit. Before you lay unknown territory. The thought of being independent, and not being taken care of by masters even if they are cruel, raises real insecurities. To go back to what you have known is easier than going forward into the unknown.

Now the generation has changed. They have different fears. Before them lay the powerful occupants of Canaan. The number many times over what the Israelites have, even thought there are over 600,000 men old enough to fight (20 years and over). The nation probably numbered over two million. So this sight of such a huge population would be enough to worry the occupants of Canaan.

When the Israelites were finished crossing they would have the Jordan resume its flow and they would have their backs to the water. Not a good defensive position for any one with a military mind. No where to retreat should things go badly.

The priests took up the Ark and entered into the waters of the Jordan. The water upstream immediately stopped just prior to their point of standing. The waters downstream continued until they were seen no more.
Upstream the water rose slowly into a huge wall as the Israelites crossed over. The ground was dry. Even further upstream, actually miles upstream, the peoples of the land witnessed this event. The Jordan had stopped flowing at the point of the Ark, and a wall of defense on the right hand of the Israelites stood up in their protection, also demonstrating the mighty power of God. Jesus Christ now seats at the right hand of the Father.

All who passed through the Jordan could not help but witness that the Ark stood on dry ground in the arms of the priests (the holiness of God - righteousness plus justice). Dry ground is solid and useful for traveling in the spiritual life. Mud is not useful as one can get mired down in thick deep mud.

The people crossed opposite Jericho, one of the most powerful of the cities in the land. Yet even that city was hiding behind is walls with its city gates closed tight. Could the city walls withstand the power of God, even when the waters of the Jordan were commanded to stop flowing? As two million people crossed over ( and this did not happen in just a few minutes), time continued. The volume of water would have to have been great especially in a flooding season, therefore the wall of water would have had to have been extremely high. Higher than the city walls. City walls take years to build. This wall of water took only a mater of hours as it rose steadily for all to see.

One would think that the people would have repented and ran out to surrender to the Israelites, but like so many people (even in our current day and age), they remained negative, even in the face of this miracle. Sin from arrogance, once it gets ingrained into ones soul, becomes a stubborn barrier. Even the truth is rejected, though it is witnessed over and over again in life.

The nation crossed over in perfect safety, but the Ark remained in the Jordan for a time. God still had a command for Joshua, and a memorial needed to be established. Seeing the miracle is one thing, but remembering it is more important. Daily Bible study helps promote that memory.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
