Josh. 4:1-9

Lesson # Josh. 4:1-9
Study Material - Josh. 4:1-9

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Josh. 4:1-9

1 Now it came about when all the nation had finished crossing the Jordan, that the LORD spoke to Joshua, saying, 2 'Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from each tribe, 3 and command them, saying,' Take up for yourselves twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priests' feet are standing firm, and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging place where you will lodge tonight.' '4 So Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the sons of Israel, one man from each tribe; 5 and Joshua said to them, 'Cross again to the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel. 6 Let this be a sign among you, so that when your children ask later, saying, 'What do these stones mean to you?' 7 then you shall say to them,' Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.' So these stones shall become a memorial to the sons of Israel forever. ' 8 And thus the sons of Israel did, as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, just as the LORD spoke to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel; and they carried them over with them to the lodging place, and put them down there. 9 Then Joshua set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan at the place where the feet of the priests who carried the ark of the covenant were standing, and they are there to this day.

We have approximately two million Israelites crossing the river bed. Hey were in ages from young infants, to old aged seniors. They carried their belongings, drove their herds and flocks, pulled their carts which carried their tents and other furnishings.

They crossed into enemy territory, and under the shocked, but watchful eye of their enemies. God did not let this miracle conclude until all had passed over, until all his commands subsequent were completed.

Joshua was commanded to select 12 men, instruct them to go back to the place where the Ark was still being held by the priests on the other side of the river. They were to collect 12 rocks and return them back to the next camp site, and build a memorial to this occasion. Further they were to return to the place of the Ark, and build an additional memorial on the river bed, a memorial which would be covered over when the water returned to its natural course.

Jesus Christ controls history. Holding back the water is nothing to Him, but certainly a miracle to men. No man can instruct a river to stop flowing without constructing some form of containment barrier, but even then water will eventually overflow it and continue on its way. So a memorial was constructed for future generations. To help them to learn the principles of doctrine taught here, to learn of the power, the faithfulness, the care which God gave to His people.

Certainly some probably went across without a second thought toward God, while others went across in total awe, retaining a lasting impression in their minds with regard to this miracle.

The men carried only 12 stones, as much as each of them in weight could carry. God held up millions of tons of raging flood water. Stopped in its tracks instantly. Mans abilities are severely limited to say the least. Man was commanded to subdue the land and multiply. Even with our great technology of our current day, we are still humbled by an occasional earthquake, flood, or even extended dry weather. We are no where closer to being in control of this planet than we were in Joshua's day.

So the memorial speaks of God and His glory, and of man and his weakness. Without God, we are nothing.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
