Josh. 4:15-19

Lesson # Josh. 4:15-19
Study Material - Josh. 4:15-19

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Josh. 4:15-19

15 Now the LORD said to Joshua, 16 'Command the priests who carry the ark of the testimony that they come up from the Jordan.' 17 So Joshua commanded the priests, saying, 'Come up from the Jordan.' 18 And it came about when the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD had come up from the middle of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up to the dry ground, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place, and went over all its banks as before. 19 Now the people came up from the Jordan on the tenth of the first month and camped at Gilgal on the eastern edge of Jericho.

Thus far the river Jordan has stopped flowing when the priests first entered into the river. It began to build up like a great wall of water, and as it accumulated the water began to flow backwards up the channel for several miles.

The whole of the nation of Israel passed by the Ark. Remember that they could not come nearer than ½ mile to the Ark. First led by the tribes that had received their land on the east side of the Jordan, then the remainder of the tribes followed across, men women, children, animals, and all their belongings. They must have spread out for a long way as they crossed.

They made camp at Gilgal, 'rolling away'. This is located close to Jericho, about two thirds of the way (about 3 miles) from the Jordan toward Jericho. It is here that Joshua will follow the command of God to circumcise all males who have not been circumcised while out in the desert. They will be 'rolling away' their final disgust in the sight of God in the circumcision procedure.

God commanded Joshua and Joshua commanded the priests. Come out of the Jordan for the crossing over, the memorial and such have all been accomplished. So they came out on the west bank and the wall of water came crashing down and it resumed its normal seasonal flooding course to the south. Overflowing its banks just as before.

Now the Israelites had their backs to the wall. A flooding river to their rear, and no retreat avenue. Before them their enemies in fortified cities. The Israelites had all their belongings, wives, children, flocks and herds of animals. These are not things that one takes to war, but here they were.

Gilgal was but a stones throw to Jericho. This had to be somewhat intimidating to those inside the walls of the city. Nearly 2 million Israelites, 600,000 men under arms would intimidate just about anyone.

It was the tenth of the first month. Four days prior to Passover. The Israelites left Egypt 40 years prior on the 15th day of the first month, the day after Passover. So they wandered in the desert for 40 years less 5 days.

Forty years earlier, Passover celebrated the passing over of mans sin, while man was in sin (in Egypt), for after that judgment they were released to their freedom - Salvation. Now they entered into the land four days preceding Passover, looking forward to the future promise which God has given them with respect to this promised land, and to all of mankind with respect to the Cross. Faith gains man salvation. Wisdom gains man maturity. Resurrection gains man completeness.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
