Josh. 4:20-24

Lesson # Josh. 4:20-24
Study Material - Josh. 4:20-24

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Josh. 4:20-24

20 And those twelve stones which they had taken from the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal. 21 And he said to the sons of Israel, 'When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, 'What are these stones?' 22 then you shall inform your children, saying,' Israel crossed this Jordan on dry ground.' 23 'For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed, just as the LORD your God had done to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed; 24 that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty, so that you may fear the LORD your God forever.'

In Gilgal the stones were set up. Probably near the tabernacle when it was re-erected and the Ark replaced inside it (in the inner room - the Holy of Holies) after the crossing of the Jordan river.

These stones served as a memory, and a symbol of Gods power, provision, and grace. When people, young or old would see the stones then by their nature of inquisitiveness or curiosity they would or should desire to know more regarding the meaning of the stones and the stories behind them.

Note that the symbol of God is simply left there for all to see. God never forces His will on anybody. He does not go door to door. He does not stand on the street corner shouting at passersby. God leaves the ball in the court of every individual person to seek information concerning Him and His policy for mankind.

Certainly all peoples in the immediate vicinity saw or heard the news of the miracle of the Jordan drying up and the waters coming to a standstill while all the nation of Israel crossed over on dry ground. They had heard of the miracle of the parting of the waters at the Red Sea some 40 years prior, and the destruction of the Egyptian army. Not one Israelite lifted a sword in battle against the Egyptians. Actually not one Israelite had a sword for battle. They were totally defenseless.

Gods power is not limited as is mans power. He created the universe and formed the contents of this planet earth. He holds the entire universe together so that it will continue to sustain itself. Gravity is maintained by God as are all other properties of physics and so forth. Were it not for Gods faithfulness then this universe would simply dissolve into nothingness and we would not be here at all.

So the inhabitants of the land saw the miracle. They heard of the stories of the miracles of God on behalf of the Israelites over the years, from the Res Sea crossing to the daily manna provided them for food. The Israelites experienced this all first hand.

Yet with all this overwhelming evidence, why do you suppose many did not believe in God? Why do you suppose that many did not pursue a daily study routine in Bible doctrine? Even today we are faced with the same questions. Today fighting is breaking out in Macedonia. Africa is having its unrest as it always seems to have. Here on the West coast of our USA we are having power shortages due to the failure of some to build more power plants, or develop more fuel resources from within our own borders. These things do not get built overnight. England is having its animal problems with hoof and mouth disease. World stock markets are slipping. You can't go anywhere on the planet and escape the problems

These are big problems. There are always problems that affect each of us personally. Whether work related, marriage related, socially related problems, or whatever. We cannot go into a hole and escape. We are trapped in this world and we are under obligation to better ourselves or slip off the end of the world into oblivion.

Since bettering ourselves is preferable, then the logical question is - how to accomplish it? The stones are always there. We see them everyday of our lives. Most people walk past them without making any type of inquiry. Some have passing interest but never follow through in their learning process. The smallest percentage of people who are interested and actually have the curiosity and natural desire to learn and grow, then follow through to some extent. But by far there is a very small fraction of people who will advance to spiritual maturity, and continue in their Bible studies throughout their lives. Many fall away because the repetition bores them. Many fall away because the current subject under study does not interest them. Many do not apply doctrine properly to their lives and they decide that it does not work.

But here is the memorial - the stones - directing the attention of any who make inquiry, that God is all powerful. That nothing on this earth can test Gods power. That God is faithful. That God has a plan for each of our lives. That there really is something better and we can attain it merely by studying Gods Word.

The inhabitants of the land could have realized their failures and inadequacies, and repented toward God, but they did not. We have the same choice. And we have it each day of our lives. We can build a new life each day and build on to what we have begun from earlier days by being positive and inquisitive toward God and all that God has to teach us.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
