Leviticus 3:12-17

Lesson # Leviticus 3:12-17
Study Material - Leviticus 3:12-17

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Lev. 3:12-17

12 'Moreover, if his offering is a goat, then he shall offer it before the LORD, 13 and he shall lay his hand on its head and slay it before the tent of meeting; and the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle its blood around on the altar. 14 'And from it he shall present his offering as an offering by fire to the LORD, the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, 15 and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, which is on the loins, and the lobe of the liver, which he shall remove with the kidneys. 16 'And the priest shall offer them up in smoke on the altar as food, an offering by fire for a soothing aroma; all fat is the Lord's. 17 'It is a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings: you shall not eat any fat or any blood.'

The goat was often used in payment of a debt of judgment. If a person wronged another person and there was to be compensation, then goats were common to the mode of payment. This payment canceled out the debt, therefore it was said to be expiated with respect to further payment. The punishment for the crime has been fulfilled and now canceled.

The offering of the goat in this peace offering speaks to this end. Jesus Christ went to the Cross in our place, paid the price for our sins, our crimes against God, and therefore the debt was expiated, fulfilled, canceled.

While the lamb in the peace offering speaks to the offering of an innocent, the goat speaks to the satisfaction of the penalty or fine which God imposed on the crime of sin. The remainder of the sacrifice is a repetition of the previous offerings for the peace offering, and those representations were intended to teach Bible doctrine to the offerer as well as anyone who was present at the sacrifice. This was the Israelites form of Bible class. Just as we have our Bible class and study the principles of doctrine in our daily studies, so the Jews studied by means of the sacrifices and annual feasts.

Verse 17, 'It is a perpetual state...' Represents their state of mind, the information, the statutes, the principles they were supposed to learn during the offerings. '...for generations, throughout all your dwellings...', the dwelling is the soul. What you think is what you are. Where you live, is in your soul. If Bible doctrine is in your soul and you are in fellowship, then you are in effect in heaven communing with God. If, however, you have no spiritual knowledge, then you are on this earth in the muck of the jungle, struggling your way through life.

'.. to eat neither the fat or the blood.'. The fat represents Jesus Christ - His impeccable status. He blood represents His work on the Cross, the judgment He endured. Mankind could not participate in this perfection or judgment since mankind is neither perfect nor qualified for the task. Only Jesus Christ was qualified for the Cross.

Many societies have taken these sacrifices, which were in effect since Adam, performed by Noah, and Abraham, and documented here by Moses, and they have compromised them by sacrificing people, by drinking the blood, by sacrificing other animals (cats, dogs, etc.) which were not acceptable in the Mosaic Law. They have offered sacrifices to idols, to volcanoes, to the moon, and so forth. These are attempts to water down and promote confusion in theology. They are direct attacks against the Bible and Jesus Christ. Their origin is most likely Satan since he is said to be the one who has confused the nations, and it is certainly his objective to keep people away from God and Bible doctrine.

Not that people do a pretty good job on their own in mixing things up by making rules and taboos that they think people should follow in order to be spiritual. But we have to note that the offerer had no part in the actual sacrifice other than to actually present the offering, which represents faith and to follow the commanded procedures which God has stated in the scriptures. This also represents acceptance of God and compliance with His plan. Man has no part in the work of the Cross. Man cannot add to it. Man cannot take away from it. There is nothing that a person can do which will save him or her, other than believing in the person of Jesus Christ, and nothing that a person can do to grow up spiritually other than faithfully studying the scriptures daily.

Certainly we have an obligation of applying what we learn to our daily lives, but that is not to our credit. Actions follow and, are a result of, knowledge. Actions alone are not a replacement for knowledge.

These sacrifices were to be maintained daily and represented a perpetual statute which was to be learned by the offerer and taught to future generations, in order to maintain a strong spiritual status in their respective souls. In Lev. Chapters 6 and 7, more rules are laid out for these offerings, such as what is done with the skins and the meat. We won't get into to much detail now, but basically the skins provided clothing - we wrap ourselves in the protection of doctrine, and the meat represents the food for our soul, Bible doctrine.

These first three offerings - the burnt offering, the gift offering, and the peace offering speak to the single decision we need to make with respect to salvation. What do you think of Christ? Believe and be saved, or reject and not be saved. God never forces this decision on anyone. Those who reject Christ, do so by their own choice.

There remain two offerings and they speak to the life of person after salvation. As a believer in Christ we continue to live on this earth and we continue to sin, so fellowship and regular 'washing' enters into our life. The question after salvation is - What do you think of doctrine? While the former offerings were concerned with a single decision in the life of an individual, these offerings are concerned with multiple decisions of an individual. But more on that beginning tomorrow.

Oh, and I shouldn't let this lesson end without a reference to the earthquake which occurred this morning up near Seattle. About 150 miles or so north of where I am. Not a huge earthquake, but certainly a good reminder that we are not in control of our environment. God gives us many reminders in life. The easiest ones to learn come from Bible study, but there are those who reject Bible study or ignore it, and for them there are other reminders that the world is greater than any of us. Disaster can occur at any moment and at any place. India had a huge earthquake recently and many thousands died. I call that a strong wake up call. Some will heed it, many more will drive deeper into their rejection of Christ and embrace their false religions. Certainly it is better to get with a program of Bible study, than to wake up one morning in the middle of a disaster, and only wish you had studied your Bible. Remember, in the jungle you are all alone.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
