Leviticus 5:4-5

Lesson # Leviticus 5:4-5
Study Material - Leviticus 5:4-5

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Lev. 5:4-5

4 'Or if a person swears thoughtlessly with his lips to do evil or to do good, in whatever matter a man may speak thoughtlessly with an oath, and it is hidden from him, and then he comes to know it, he will be guilty in one of these. 5 'So it shall be when he becomes guilty in one of these, that he shall confess that in which he has sinned.

Swearing is, again, not foul language, but the promise or a commitment, or an oath that one might take for the benefit of another. 'Shaba', means to take an oath, to swear, to promise. The sin occurs when one makes a commitment and then reneges or welshes on that commitment.

But here there is even more to the sin. When a person commits to doing 'evil', or 'good', then is the commitment to intentionally commit sin or sins. As well as the intention of doing good. Both sin and good have their source from the sin nature in man. Sin we can probably understand, but good??

What is good in Gods eyes and why is human good considered as bad as sin thus requiring an offering to correct for it? Well it is the good intention that is the broken promise. And it is the intended sin that is wrong as well.

There are two failures mentioned here. The first is the promise to do evil or a wrong deed. 'I'll get even with them', type of attitude for just an example. That is a sin with corrupt motives. A person is angry, jealous, or just discontented, so they swear to do something bad and then they may or may not follow through. This is a sin of the tongue as well. A spoken swearing of intent.

The second swearing is for some kind of good, 'I'll promise to do this or that for you'. Then the promise is forgotten or simply not carried out. Again this is a sin of a lie in effect, and a sin of the tongue. If you don't intend to do something, then don't make any promises.

So far we have sin committed. Intentional sins. Overt sins, mental sins, patterns of sins due to association with bad things or people, or ideas, and of course sins of the tongue. This leads to the fifth offering, the sin offering offered for known sins. It, like the fourth offering, is mandatory. There is no option for doing or not doing the offering ritual. Unlike the first three offerings that were basically optional because the person may or may not accept the savior, then once saved a person finds himself inside the family of God. And when in Rome, that is, heaven, you must follow the rules of heaven. If God pays the rent, then we all must toe the line and do as He says. Of course most people do not.

The command is to confess, 'yadah', to cast out, to throw away the stone, to confess. This is to remove the burden of a heavy load on ones self. The confession is not to the priest, only the offering is brought to the priest. The confession precedes the offering. The confession it directed to God, and in the privacy of the believers soul and in prayer to God. The offering is the representation to the public or whom ever is present, that the offerer knows and understands the principles of confession and has complied with Gods command. The ritual of the offering is for teaching confession. The offering is not the confession.

The confession precedes the offering. The spiritual life of the believer is in the soul, not on some alter. We do not go to a church just to be spiritual for those few moments that we are inside that building. We may go there to study in a formal Bible class, but we don't place our life on hold until we can find a suitable church in which we somehow think we have to be inside of before our prayers are heard. No matter where you are in life, your relationship with God is as close as your thoughts. Location, geographical area, your state of physical health or mental health, your clothes, your assets, etc. are of no concern. Your attitude is the issue. Your positive attitude to be specific. Whether you feel guilty, or sorry for yourself, or whether you feel any type of emotion at all, is not relevant. Confession is a matter of stating your sins to God. Period. Being guilty or sorry are just two more sins you would have to confess. So clear the decks, clear your mind, stabilize your life and get back on track. Back into fellowship by confession, and in the proper manner of it.

The best timing of confession is immediately following the sin. That is, you sin, you immediately realize it, and you exercise immediate self control and confess it, and discontinue further sinning no matter what your situation. To postpone your confession means to postpone your return into fellowship and back into the safety of Gods sphere of protection and blessing.

David makes it quite clear in Psa. 32:5 and in Psa 38:18. He confessed his sins to God the Father only and to no one else. To avoid his confession would only serve to promote the pressures and miseries of life.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
