Obadiah 1:2-4

2 Behold, I have made [nathan] thee small [qatan] among the heathen [gowy]: thou art greatly [ma`od] despised [bazah].
3 The pride [zadown] of thine heart [leb] hath deceived [nasha] thee, thou that dwellest [shakan] in the clefts [chagav] of the rock [cela], whose habitation [yashab] is high [marowm]; that saith [amar] in his heart [leb], Who shall bring me down [yarad] to the ground [erets]?
4 Though thou exalt [gabahh] thyself as the eagle [nesher], and though thou set [suwm] thy nest [qen] among the stars [kowkab], thence will I bring thee down [yarad], saith [na'um] the LORD [Yahovah]. KJV-Interlinear

2 'Behold, I will make you small among the nations; You are greatly despised. 3 'The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, You who live in the clefts of the rock, In the loftiness of your dwelling place, Who say in your heart, 'Who will bring me down to earth?' 4 'Though you build high like the eagle, Though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down,' declares the LORD. NASB

Arrogance is a state of presumption. Here, the word for pride means to 'boil up' such as the stew which Jacob cooked for Esau, when Esau traded his birthright for a single meal. So too, the arrogance of Edom boiled up, overwhelming their bounds within their minds.

Edom prided herself in her great wealth. They obtained it by trading, and raiding, and looting their neighbors. They had very productive mining operations in copper and such. And, the geography of the area was so mountainous, and their dwellings (caves) were so set back into the high cliffs, that they were virtually impregnable.

The pride of Edom would be her undoing. The peoples of Edom thought so highly of themselves that they literally deceived themselves into thinking that they were invincible and unconquerable. Though over the generations its population died over a normal course of a life span, this did not sway them from ignoring God and their inevitable destiny in the after life.

Their attitude was one similar to that of Lucifer (Satan), 'Who can bring me down to the ground?' And so the pattern of arrogance follows that which was established by Satan long ago. Man does nothing new in his history, that Satan has not already done in his pre-human history.

Eccl. 1:9-10
9 That which has been is that which will be, And that which has been done is that which will be done. So, there is nothing new under the sun. 10 Is there anything of which one might say, 'See this, it is new '? Already it has existed for ages Which were before us. NASB

The arrogance of mankind, the rise and fall of nations and empires, the attitudes which are common throughout mans history, none of them are original, but are repeats of that which has already gone before. Man in effect 'nests among the stars' a reference to the fallen angels who followed Satan as well as the presumption of living over and above all others who they deemed beneath themselves..

Any rejection of God follows the pattern of rejection which was initiated by Lucifer (Satan) long ago.

And God answers the arrogance of presumption of Edom just as He did Satan's of long ago, with an emphatic, 'you will be made small' in contrast to their self exaltation.

Arrogance is a very powerful sin. With continued exposure to it, one is soon trapped totally (boiling over) in its deception. Though its flaws are obvious to all, to the arrogant, all flaws are never seen and they live inside a sphere of lies so thick that they can never see outside of its dense fog. They are doomed.

Considering themselves safe in the high cliffs as eagles consider themselves, God will bring greater eagles which will swoop down on the eagles of arrogance and snatch them up to their certain death and judgment.

History if full of the eagles of presumption. Thinking that they know better, are more in tuned with life and truth which they invent within their own mind. For the arrogant people of life, sooner or later reality catches up with them and they are thoroughly surprised when their doom falls all around them.

God gives us all many chances to get with a program of a daily Bible study and therefore get with our spiritual life. But, all too often people are just not interested. They have more important things to do in life. And their 'more important' things become their presumptuousness of the realities they prefer. And it all leads to the taking advantage of others in various ways, during the course of ones pursuit of happiness and self fulfilling lusts.

Some pursue a course of asceticism, while others follow a course of lasciviousness. Both roads lead to degeneracy and evil in some form.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
