Obadiah 1:5-6

5 If thieves [gannab] came [bow] to thee, if robbers [shadad] by night [layil], (how art thou cut off [damah]) would they not have stolen [ganab] till they had enough [day]? if the grapegatherers [batsar] came [bow] to thee, would they not leave [sha'ar] some grapes [olelah]?
6 How are the things of Esau [Esav] searched out [chaphas]! how are his hidden [mitspun] things sought up [ba`ah]! KJV-Interlinear

5 'If thieves came to you, If robbers by night - O how you will be ruined! — Would they not steal only until they had enough? If grape gatherers came to you, Would they not leave some gleanings? 6 'O how Esau will be ransacked, And his hidden treasures searched out! NASB

Thieves, when they rob someone, will hit fast and run with whatever they can take out quickly. If they doddle too long, then they run the risk of being discovered and caught. You can be asleep in your bed, or even away from home. Thieves can break into your home and take whatever they can find quickly. Perhaps jewelry, perhaps something that is obviously priceless, most probably something that is small and easy to carry like a small computer or stereo component. They may even load up a truck with your stuff.

Regardless of what they take, when you wake up or get home, you will always find your home relatively intact. Maybe a broken window or a broken down door will be apparent. Maybe furniture has been changed around or pushed over in disarray. But your home is there, and most of your things. You probably even have insurance, so whatever is lost, can be replaced. So in effect, what you have lost is not lost at all.

You just have to go through all of the inconvenience of figuring out what is gone and follow the insurance claim process.

Now that is a typical result of a robbery. The haves get taken by the have-nots.

On the other side of the economic scale, you have harvesters clearing out a field of its production. Here the haves (the owners) take from the field, and the have-nots (those who are poor and in need of some form of charity) are left with the gleanings.

Harvesters get most of the crop, but there is always some crop left in the field. Gleaners usually are allowed to come along after the harvesters and they have a moral right to whatever is left. Granted it generally isn't much, but it is enough to survive on. The book of Ruth includes an excellent example of this concept of charity.

So the poor of the land, regardless of their poor financial state, will always find some form of charity or blessing from which they can survive in life. Times are never so difficult that there remains nothing.

Then there is the judgment of God. When Gods patience and courtesy finally run out on you, and He turns His back on you, then you will find yourself in deep, deep doggie doo-doo.

This is the state of Edom, herein described with the term of Esau, their founder. Esau is the son of Isaac. You recall from history that Esau lived some 2000 years BC. The nation of Edom did not fall until 70 AD. And, in addition to that, mankind will not have its final judgment until the second advent of Christ. We do not know when that date will be. It still remains future to us, but it couldn't be any sooner than seven years from now if the Rapture took place today. The Second Advent occurs at the end of the seven year Tribulation.

So God has a great deal of patience with respect to people as individuals allowing most to run a full life span before pulling the plug, and with respect to the human race, many thousands of years pass before major events in history take place.

But when God says 'enough' then there are no more options.

Thieves in the jungle leave something behind. Harvesters leave something even if the harvesters are extremely greedy.

But Gods judgment leaves nothing when it is final.

The nation of Edom would be ransacked, stripped, raped, ravaged, decimated, robbed of her wealth to the last gnats eyelash. The invaders will find all of the hiding places, and kill and torture, and carry away all of the wealth of the nation.

Edom prided herself in her wealth, and her arrogance will be all that is left (for what it is worth). When anyone disregards their spiritual life (does not comply with Gods commands) then they are guilty of arrogance. They presume (by default) that whatever they think, believe, or do in life is quite enough. That is of course wrong, and the results of that pattern of thought will be disastrous.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
