You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Obadiah 1:8-9

8 Shall I not in that day [yowm], saith [na'um] the LORD [Yahovah], even destroy [abad] the wise [chakam] men out of Edom [Edom], and understanding [tabuwn] out of the mount [har] of Esau [Esav]?
9 And thy mighty [gibbowr] men, O Teman [Teyman], shall be dismayed [chathath], to the end that every one [iysh] of the mount [har] of Esau [Esav] may be cut off [karath] by slaughter [qetel]. KJV-Interlinear

8 'Will I not on that day,' declares the LORD, 'Destroy wise men from Edom And understanding from the mountain of Esau? 9 'Then your mighty men will be dismayed, O Teman, In order that everyone may be cut off from the mountain of Esau by slaughter. NASB

Arrogance gives one a false sense of wisdom, a false hope, and a false security. One presumes that he is wiser than he really is. The beliefs, and attitudes, the presumptions all serve to feed the arrogance of the negative person. Negative with respect to God and His Word.

God is the sole and only source of support in this universe. When God withdraws His position in anyone's life, then the jungle of the world will take over. The jungle is a deadly place, it has no allies and no friends. Death is the only associate of the jungle. The jungle cares nothing for your attitude, or your personal sense of what is fair. There is no fair thing in the jungle.

And the Jungle is the place where we have defined, for this study, as the environment which is outside of the spiritual life.

You have only two places where you can live, in this life. The first is the place of fellowship. The second is in the jungle. There is no third location. Sometimes we call the jungle, the place of carnality, or the place of sin, or the environment of darkness. They are all synonymous terms.

Edom is the geographical area in which many generations of people lived a life in accordance with the pattern of thought which came from its founder, Esau. So we have reference to Esau for the way he thought. Esau was greedy, a cheater, and arrogant. He thought that his way was the only way. Of course his way was intended to serve his own interest, not anyone else's.

All arrogant people have their own self, in mind. Others are mere food for their ego. Professors and politicians have this kind of attitude. Others too, but professors and politicians are a convenient examples.

Arrogance gives one a sense of power, of influence, of courage. And, when all of these are put to the test, then the arrogant person falls into their real personality - selfish cowardice.

Edom is a prime example of how this works in history. They were high on themselves. They were high on their own successes in history. They took as they wished, influenced others at will, and were safe behind their high cliff walls. Or so they thought.

But arrogance blinds one to the truth of life. God is the truth. God alone supports and perpetuates this universe and everything in it. That includes you, the hairs on your head, the beats of your heart, the defenses you have against the jungle. And, when God withdraws His support, then you have nothing.

Try going out on the ocean and sail along in fair weather. You have a sense of control over your life. The storm comes up and turns your ship over. You are now under the control of the ocean waters. Where is your control now? Can you combat the ocean? Can you command the wind and waves? No. You are totally helpless, and you are food for the sharks.

So it is in life when God finally cuts your arrogance off.

Edom was arrogant. They did not change. They refused to change. God allowed it neighbors to come into the nation and its capital city Teman (named after the son of Esau). The people were totally destroyed. Their destruction was at the hands of their enemies - God permitted it.

If God did not wish for their destruction, then the enemies would have failed. But, that was not to be.

Many peoples in history have gone the way of the dinosaur and disappeared from history. They were an arrogant people, negative toward God, worshippers of everything which is false. God allows a neighbor, a discoverer, a disease, an enemy, or someone else to come along and bring destruction down on a people who have become degenerate in their souls. Note that degeneracy is not primarily a pattern of actions that people take, but degeneracy is a pattern of thought first.

All degeneracy begins with a negative attitude toward, an indifference toward, and ultimately the rejection of God, His Son, His plan, and so forth.

Slaughter means here, a terrifying and violent path to death. It comes in many forms. An enemy can be very imaginative when it comes to being brutal to men and women who are their victims. Swim with the sharks and you are the main course.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
