Obadiah 1:17-18

17 But upon mount [har] Zion [Tsiyown] shall be deliverance [paleytah], and there shall be holiness [qodesh]; and the house [bayith] of Jacob [Ya`aqob] shall possess [yarash] their possessions [mowrash].
18 And the house [bayith] of Jacob [Ya`aqob] shall be a fire [esh], and the house [bayith] of Joseph [Yowceph] a flame [lehabah], and the house [bayith] of Esau [Esav] for stubble [qash], and they shall kindle [dalaq] in them, and devour [akal] them; and there shall not be any remaining [sariyd] of the house [bayith] of Esau [Esav]; for the LORD [Yahovah] hath spoken [dabar] it. KJV-Interlinear

17 'But on Mount Zion there will be those who escape, And it will be holy. And the house of Jacob will possess their possessions. 18 'Then the house of Jacob will be a fire And the house of Joseph a flame; But the house of Esau will be as stubble. And they will set them on fire and consume them, So that there will be no survivor of the house of Esau,' For the LORD has spoken. NASB

A Peter was described as a 'rock' or rather a chip of a rock, from an even larger rock, from which it came. So now we have the contrast of Jacob and Esau.

They both came from the same father. They both grew up in the same house, with the same parents. They had the same education, the same opportunities, the same exposure to the truth and lies of the world. Jacob decided for good, and Esau decided for bad.

Esau became the failed rock. He was a chip from the larger rock of truth, but he was discarded as a failure. And his own decisions caused his failure.

Mount Zion is representative of the vast mountain of doctrine which is contained in the scriptures. Zion resides within the city of Jerusalem, the city of peace (Gods peace), or that place which is attained when a believer advances to spiritual maturity. Inner peace is one of the many characteristics of maturity. Doctrine is the foundation and substance of that maturity.

Those people who escape the onslaught of the world will be mature individuals. Few though they may be, but no matter what the attack, no matter what the predicament, spiritually mature people are delivered.

The possessions of the world will become the possessions of believers. Jacob is the representative father of Gods nation, Israel. Israel is representative of the collection of peoples who are believers. Salvation is their common characteristic which makes them a part of the nation of God.

Believers are a fire, the fire of righteousness and justice. Both of these come together to form the holiness of Gods salvation. Righteousness is Gods perfection - without flaw, without blemish, a totally sin free and sin nature free existence. Justice is the cleansing away, a washing away of all unrighteousness. Justice is the answer to all sin, all evil, all that is an error in life. When justice is applied, then all transgression through the application of justice, is washed away and made clean again.

Joseph is the favored son of Jacob. Jacob was the obedient one, the youngest, and in turn Joseph received the double portion. Joseph represents the spiritually mature believer. Mature believers are Gods favorite - they are the apple of His eye, the recipients of His matchless grace and super blessing over and above that which is given to believers in general.

Esau on the other hand, is the failed person in life. He was here in history, and then he was gone. All unbelievers are here in history and then they will be gone forever. We will never see them ever again. One of the reasons that you should not ever associate with unbelievers on too personal of a level - one day soon you will both part and they will never be seen again. Minimizes the disappointment you might experience in this life.

As for believers who go through life and never gain an interest in a Bible study, then they will lose out in this life - they will be miserable, and then in the next life they will lose out on their share of eternal blessings which are over and above the norm. Eternity is a long time and losing something forever is a very big loss.

On planet earth, there will be no one (Esau types) who will survive Gods discipline and/or judgment. A negative attitude, and indifferent attitude, and compromising attitude, an apathetic attitude, a condescending attitude, all of these and more will gain you absolutely nothing in life - nothing. All are forms of arrogance. Arrogance is nothing more than the presumption that you are right in whatever you think or do, and God is not.

In short you think that you are smart and everyone else is stupid and in fact you are the stupid one. You just reject that idea.

Mature believers on the other hand are the flame, the source of the fire which reveals the truth of life. Negative people will be burned up by the truth, but mature believers are elevated and promoted and blessed by that same fire.

'For the Lord has spoken.' Regardless of your attitude, God will always have the last say in everything.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
