Ruth 4:9-12

9 Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, 'You are witnesses today that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon. 10 Moreover, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, to be my wife in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance, so that the name of the deceased may not be cut off from his brothers or from the court of his birth place; you are witnesses today.' 11 And all the people who were in the court, and the elders, said, 'We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, both of whom built the house of Israel; and may you achieve wealth in Ephrathah and become famous in Bethlehem. 12 Moreover, may your house be like the house of Perez whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the offspring which the LORD shall give you by this young woman.'

Public notice is given by Boaz. Before many witnesses the arrangement is made between Boaz and the unnamed kinsman. There would be no basis for claim from anyone especially the unnamed kinsman who had the opportunity given to him, but he declined in the presence of witnesses.

Boaz laid claim to all that was formerly owned by Elimelech and his two sons. What they once had was mortgaged and they left for a foreign land never to return again. Their deaths prevented them from returning and reclaiming their rights to property and family.

Boaz was the wealthy prince of wisdom, who saw the value of a positive attitude in Ruth. He made known his interest in her with by means of the privileges he extended to her. She returned the interest and approached him laying at his feet in subordination to his authority, and further placing her future in his hands.

Elimelech whose name means god of the mighty king, or powerful king, received that name from his parents. He was distracted as indicated in the names of his sons, Chilion and Mahlon, which mean respectfully, wasting away and invalid. So the family left grace, the land of milk and honey and went to a land of sin, Moab, the offspring of incest between Lot and his daughters. There they died detached and lost from their former home. Their one link was Naomi, who brought Bible doctrine to the foreign land and taught Ruth of God and the promises of a savior.

They returned and were redeemed by a wealthy prince, that out of their despair and poverty, came prosperity and blessing. Boaz further gave honor to the dead, or those men who once lived in Bethlehem, the city of bread, but became lost in their move to a foreign land. And so Elimelech's name and the names of his sons were listed in the public notice which Boaz gave as he stated that, he, Boaz, would marry Ruth the wife of the deceased Mahlon, brother of Chilion and son of Elimelech, that their son, who was yet to be born, Obed, would be a representative heir of Elimelech (God and mighty king), the prophecy of Jesus Christ, who would come in due course through this line of Boaz and Ruth, a gentile. And who, Jesus Christ, would be our eternal redeemer after the pattern of Boaz.

The unnamed kinsman would be lost to oblivion never to be heard from nor even known again. He preferred his earthly inheritance, which too was lost to history. Boaz on the other hand did not feel hindered by the life Ruth had led, in her poverty, in her humiliation as a gleaner. Boaz and Ruth would become blessed as members of the line of Christ.

They were blessed in the prayers offered by those who witnessed their marriage, as they were wished the same home building success as Rachel and Leah, the wives of Jacob who gave birth to most of the nation of Israel, especially the tribes of Levi (the priesthood), and Judah (the kingship), and Joseph (the double portion). So great success, authority and position is wished upon the marriage of Boaz and Ruth. Also, just as the offspring of Tamar and Perez, who produced Judah, and through whose lines became a numerous people, so wishes of great numbers of descendants is wished on Boaz and Ruth.

Out of Ephrathah, the region surrounding Bethlehem, will come the savior and our eternal redeemer, Jesus Christ. So, Boaz and Ruth by having sons that will rise to great heights (Jesus Christ) will gain great wealth (recovered inheritance to the universe) and an honorable name (sitting at the right hand of the God the Father).

This passage draws together all of the flaws and failures of man, showing man in a hopeless situation of poverty and depravity, and the redemption given to man by a wealthy Prince, God. The choices that some make in wanting to retain what earthly pleasures and wealth they currently have verses giving up those inheritance rights, for the opportunity of something even greater in the future. Boaz gave up his own name in behalf of the deceased's name, and in so doing gained a wife of remarkable character, as well as gaining a destiny such that he could never have obtained from his own efforts.

Ruth, a foreigner, was brought into the family of Israel, Gods family. And Naomi who had lost everything, was given a new family and children, and a new life with purpose and happiness.
