23 And [de] be renewed [ananeoo] in the spirit [pneuma] of
your [humon] mind; [nous] KJV-Interlinear
23 and that
you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, NASB
Renewed, 'ananeoo,' means to renovate, to reform, to change completely over in thought through intensity, through repetition, to make fresh, to make new, to be youthful, new, young.
Spirit, 'pneuma,' means breath, life, air, to breathe by inhale and exhale, mind, heart, soul.
Mind, 'nous,' means intellect, thought, will, understanding, to be sure, to know.
And therefore this mandate comes from God, that you completely change over the content of your soul, what you know, what you believe, what you contain within the active and inactive aspects of your soul. To completely change how you think, what you think. To breathe in, inhale, to study, and to breathe out, exhale, to apply to your daily life.
Breathing is an ongoing activity. The beating of the heart is an ongoing activity. Neither of these can you stop for even a few minutes. They are daily and certainly second by second activities that are necessary in your life.
And to do this change over, with intensity, with repetition, on an ongoing basis, day after day, throughout your life. That is the commitment and the intensity by which you effect the change within your soul.
This change is to remove the old thoughts and ruler of your soul, the old man or sin nature, and change to new thoughts, or the new man, the spiritual perspective of God.
And this is accomplished by means of a daily study, 'Study to show thyself approved…'
Bible doctrine is the daily food, the daily nourishment of the soul. All living things must eat and eat properly in order to survive and remain healthy. To not eat, or to eat improperly, renders health problems of many kinds.
Certainly, no food, or no correct food, yields illness, disease, and eventually death.
And to reject doctrine, means spiritual illness, and dysfunction within the spiritual life, to the point of permanent loss of spiritual attributes and benefits leading to a callousness of the soul and misery in life until one eventually dies.
A changeover does not mean a quick change, does not mean a little change, but means a complete change. Out totally with the old, and in totally with the new. That mandates a commitment and a dedication to making the change in your life.
There is no place in the spiritual life, for even a little temptation or enticement from the sin nature. Play both sides of the fence and you will lose.
