Luke 24:4-8

Luke 24:4-8

4 And [kai] it came to pass [ginomai] , as [en] they [autos] were much perplexed [diaporeo] thereabout [peri] [toutou] , [kai] behold [idou] , two [duo] men [aner] stood by [ephistemi] them [autos] in [en] shining [astrapto] garments [esthesis] :
5 And [de] as [ginomai] they [autos] were [ginomai] afraid [emphobos] , and [kai] bowed down [klino] their faces [prosopon] to [eis] the earth [ge] , they said [epo] unto [pros] them [autos] , Why [tis] seek ye [zeteo] the living [zao] among [meta] the dead [nekros] ?

4 And it happened that while they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling apparel; 5 and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, 'Why do you seek the living One among the dead? 6 'He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, 7 saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. 5 And the angel answered and said to the women, 'Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. 6 'He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. 7 'And go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going before you into Galilee, there you will see Him; behold, I have told you.' NASB

Mark 16:5-8
5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. 6 And he said to them, 'Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him. 7 'But go, tell His disciples and Peter, 'He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He said to you.'' 8 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. NASB

John and Peter have come and gone. The women have remained there and now see an angel standing in the doorway. They are shocked but not the same as the Roman soldiers who were absolutely terrified. The angel answered their questioning minds. None of them had asked a question, but they were concerned as to what had happened to Jesus.

They are invited inside the tomb, 'Come, see the place where He was lying. They go inside and now they see two angels sitting, one at each end of the place where Jesus had been laying. These two angels represent the two angels who were positioned on either side of the mercy seat on the Ark of the Covenant, Ex. 5:18. One representing Gods perfect righteousness and the other representing Gods perfect justice.

Gods righteousness in His state of sinless purity. No defect, no uncleanness, no impurity, no flaw, no blemish, no error in His perfect essence and character. Justice is the action of cleansing. When a defect is encountered, then it must be dealt with and punished or purged, or cleansed from existence. This is the work of Christ on the Cross. The purging of our sins and thus paving the way for our renewed access to God.

We cannot approach God unless we approach in a sphere of cleanliness. Jesus Christ cured this problem and thus both angels of righteousness and justice are now satisfied from Gods perspective.

The angel reminds them of Jesus' words, that he was to be taken, crucified, and then rise up after three days.

Though Jesus had the power to let His life go and to take it up again, John 10:18, He forfeited that power and allowed the Father and the Holy Spirit to raise Him up again. He was raised by the power of the Father, Rom. 6:4, Gal 1:1, 1 Peter 1:3, and by the Holy Spirit, Rom. 8:11.

The women were instructed to go tell the others of the resurrection of Christ, and that He would soon be meeting with all of them in Galilee. The meeting in Galilee will be where Jesus formally commissions the apostles and the disciples to go out to the world and to evangelize it in His name. Galilee is a place of positive volition and of course of many cultures, both Jew and Gentile. Jerusalem is a place of extreme rejection of God.

He will make several appearances before hand as will He manifest Himself to them several times before going to Galilee. He appeared to Peter, Luke 24:34, to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, Luke 24:15, Mark 16:12, to ten of the disciples as they were assembled on resurrection evening, John 20:19, to all eleven disciples eight days later, John 20:26, and to seven of the disciples as they were fishing in the Sea of Galilee, John 21:1. Then Jesus' biggest appearance will be to the disciples in Galilee, where He 'appeared to more than five hundred at one time,' 1 Cor. 15:6, and where He would commission the eleven to their ministry.

Every now and then events happen, which are intended to get our attention and to remind us to focus on God and our spiritual life (or lack of it). Back then they had the crucifixion which was a traumatic event for those present. Now they have the witness of the angels at the tomb, and yet the women will run back home and say little if anything, at least initially, because they are frightened. Once they do begin telling their story, no one will believe them.

Now look to our own current time. About three years ago, two planes crashed into the towers in New York. That was a wake up call for us all. Terrorists were developing in the world and nothing had been done about it. So we acted and saw the removal of many cancers throughout the world.

Then attitudes changed and now we have the politics of the day bickering over what was right, what was wrong, who to blame and so forth, and now again we have yet another wake up call presented to us. One not as dramatic as the towers in New York, but one that is dramatic none the less. It is a simple movie. Pictures on a screen which was released yesterday. If you haven't seen it, then put it on your must see movie list. 'The Passion of the Christ.'

The movie leaves out some details, but that isn't important. The impact of it is that it puts an imprint into your mind as to how things probably were back in those days. This is going to be seen internationally I presume and, in my opinion, will become yet another wake up call for, many who have slipped away into the politics of mediocrity of our current day.

We always have our personal wake up calls, but those things are personal and generally unique to each of us or for small groups, families, geographical areas and so forth. The twin towers was a global wake up. This film is going to be a global wake up.

Three possibilities will result. First, people will see it and get back to their spiritual lives. Blessing and prosperity will result. Second, people will see it and be indifferent or arguments will prevail as to its intention and meaning. Problems will result followed with other wake up calls of various kinds.

Third, people will ignore it and big trouble will find its way into the world. Those who do not wake up with a whisper might need thunder to get their attention. I think it is interesting, but not by accident, that in our day of modern cinematography, that it isn't until now that someone has brought to the screen, a picture about the Crucifixion, combined with all of its violence. Nothing happens in life by accident. When God gives us a visual of the crucifixion, something that no one in history has ever seen except those who were at the actual event, then that is in itself significant.

Today we are the first generation which is now given an opportunity to actually see the events of the crucifixion by means of this film. Think about that. No other generation since Adam, nor after the time of Christ has seen the crucifixion. Only one group of people saw it, until now.

We do not have too many measuring devices with which to determine the spiritual state of a nation, but one measure is in the national elections. From day to day we cannot see into the minds of everyone like God can, but periodically we have elections and that is a good indicator of where our national collective spiritual status sets, and in what direction it is heading. It will be interesting seeing the results of our own national elections this Fall, and from that we might get a glimpse of what direction our country is heading as far as Gods blessings or discipline are concerned.

Now what does this have to do with our current study? The apostles were resistant to the truth. The women were surprised, but came around to their senses first. Common sense should have enlightened them but they still needed a visual confirmation before they would actually see, understand, and believe. Not believe in the Messiah, for they all had already done that, but they just needed to believe in Gods Word, its intent, and purpose, and power.

Today we have a real threat in liberal thinking which is bad enough, but an even greater threat exists in what you could call a shallow and jello based attitude in society. The only way to get peoples attention is to give them something that will shock them in some way. I've often wished I had some means of causing thunder to roll off of these pages and crack the ears of those who read these words. Oh well. God will do the good stuff.
