1 Timothy 6:5
5 Perverse disputings [paradiatribe] of men [anthropos] of corrupt [diaphtheiro] minds, [nous] and [kai] destitute [apostereo] of the truth, [aletheia] supposing [nomizo] that gain [porismos] is [einai] godliness: [eusebeia] from [apo] such [toioutos] withdraw thyself. [aphistemi] KJV-Interlinear
5 and constant friction between
men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a
means of gain. NASB
Perverse dispute, is the application of the misemployment of
terminology.In other words, it means
that those who promote false teachings, false ideas, false
concepts, false anything, misuse words in order to get their opinions heard.
To pervert means to
distort, to misrepresent, to alter.
Dispute means to
disagree, quarrel, to argue.
And in short, promoters
of that which is false, do nothing to arrive at a
sound solution, but only pursue that which pursues indefinite chaos.
Their minds are
depraved.
Depraved means,
corrupt, absent of anything sound, degraded, ruined. Their minds contain nothing sound. Truth is absent from within them.
Truth is the food of good
health and preservation.Absence of
truth means decay, rot, unhealthy, putrid.
Deprived of truth is an
interesting phrase.Truth is readily available
to all who genuinely desire it.However
to those who reject truth, it becomes withheld not by God or others, but by
means of their own decision to reject it.
They lack truth because
they reject it.And they reject truth,
because they presume that their path to godliness (a spiritual life, a full or
complete life) comes to them through their own efforts, and not by means of God
or truth.
They seek to define
their own truth, however lacking full knowledge of the facts of the realities
of this universe and beyond, they are incapable of determining truth on their
own.They therefore invent truth, or
better phrased, they invent their own reality.
One which is convenient to their own desires, agenda, and goals.
And what is the goal of
false ideas?Gain, by their own definition.
Some value money or
wealth.Some value the sense of causing
confusion among others.Some value the
adoration or approbation they perceive to have from others, because of their
views.
In every case, those
who promote that which is false, have defined their own goals of happiness and
success, as that which comes to them by means of their own efforts, or that
which is from this world.God is left
out entirely.
False teachers deny
truth.False teaching does not advance
ones spiritual life (the completion of ones life),
but hinders it.False teaching is absent
of truth.False teaching is nothing more
than empty smoke filled air, lacking substance of every type. False teaching serves destruction and nothing
else.
From such people, you
should separate yourself, because just as disease is caused and spread by
contact, so too, the disease of false teaching is spread by contact with it. Avoid it, avoid flirting with it, avoid even getting involved in its debates, because it is
not interested in an answer, but the perpetuation of disputes, and the cause of
your ultimate failure in life.
